I finished this book, but I found it too boring and repetitive to enjoy. It was one of those where I kept waiting for it to make sense, but it never really did. If it had been a longer book, I would have just given up on it. I didn't like any of the characters, nor did I appreciate the gruesome description of the murder. Plus, I was expecting magical realism, and this definitely wasn't it. I get that the author is trying to say something, but it didn't land for me.

Maybe because it was so short, I didn't have the time to wrap up in it and just fall in love like I did with One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera -- hence the four stars instead of five. On the other hand, this novel accomplishes everything that his longer works do, and I felt immensely satisfied when I read the final page. Marquez is a pure, literary genius.

⭐5⭐

Maravilla

The writing in this is so good. Set in a town in Colombia, a resident, young and rich, and of Arab descent, is murdered. The narrator is interviewing everyone in the town 20 years later to see how it unfolded - how did everyone know and let it happen? You start with well this man slept with a woman who was to be someone else's wife. But you end with, did he? And the mish mosh of everyone's reasons and guilt for letting it happen. Fascinating read.

Really good story telling! Told in retrospect the narrator is quite literally chronicling the death of his friend that was foretold. His murderers told just about everyone in town that they were going to kill him to supposedly avenge their sisters honor— but everyone has an excuse for why they did not prevent the events from occurring. I bought this copy from a library sale and the periodic illustrations were a nice tough. Quick read, I recommend!

Such a twisted tale! Love the writing.. I just can't seem to figure out why Marquez uses full names??

Total y absolutamente recomendable.
