3.5 stars. The reasons that I had a hard time with this book were actually more to do with me than the book. I think that it was actually a good story and I liked learning more about some of the main characters from the earlier books. My biggest problem was that it has been such a long time since I read the first three Study books that I just couldn't remember many of the characters and story lines from them and I found that frustrating enough that I had a hard time just enjoying the story. Also, I probably wouldn't have read this if I had realized that it was the first book in a new series because I really hate waiting for the sequels. All in all, if you like the Study series, then this is worth reading...though it would also be worth it to wait for the next several to be written before you start.

I love Maria V. Snyder and I'm obsessed with Yelena and Valek so it saddens me to say I was slightly disappointed by this book. It was not bad it just was not as good as I wanted it to be.

Love to read about Yelena and Valek again! <3

This book was written differently than the rest of the "Study" and "Glass" books, in that Snyder switched between POVs from chapter to chapter. It was an interesting switch. The story did feel to progress much slower than the previous books, but it was made up for in the fact that it gave Snyder an opportunity to go into Valek's backstory and reveal how he became an assassin. Valek is hands down my favorite character, so I enjoyed his chapters very much. I can't wait to find out what happens between Yelena and Valek in the next book after that cliff hanger we were left with!

More than a three but not quite a four. Love being with these characters again. A few choppy type moments and I wish yelena and valet spent more time together!

READ THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW. IF YOU LIKED POISON STUDY THAN READ THIS BOOK. YOU WILL BE SOOO DISAPPOINTED IF YOU DONT.

I hardly ever write reviews because I read so many books. This wonderful book demands a review. I loved Shadow Study. The character development was enriched by having different perspectives. The characters are the heart of this book and it was so fabulous to spend time with Yelena and Valek again. The plot was excellent as well and I loved the twists and turns. This is an amazing series.

I have a soft spot for Maria V Snyder - I fell in love with Poison Study when I was young and read every one of her books after, despite some of them being very flawed. I'm very conflicted about Shadow Study, I was hoping for a triumphant return of her most popular series, but I felt it fell flat. Despite the interesting premise and stronger start, the rest of the book moved along slowly and seemed to be more focused on recapping old events or fleshing out characters backstories (I'm sorry but the Valek backstory just didn't not capture my interest) rather than moving the plot forward. It was hard for me to even push my way through it, I certainly hope that the remaining two improve though I'm not sure if I'll be reading them.

While it was nice to have a book more focused on Yelena and Valek, this book wasn't all that great. There was too much going on and too many story lines to follow. So many unanswered questions, which I'm sure will be answered (hopefully) in the next book. But the book just wasn't as entertaining as I had expected. It was fun to have chapters from Janco's point of view though, because he's one of my favorite characters in the book. I hope to see even more Ari and Janco in the next book.
