Confusing. How were the ghost and Freddie connected? Just at the end? And I kept thinking it was a different ghost narrating, but I think it was the same one.
This book really could have been a contender. Unfortunately, I think it tried to be too many things to too many people and missed the mark.
Pros: Stunning writing, poignant lines, believable characters, a few very touching scenes.
Cons: Weak setting description (I really love how historical fiction is able to capture the essence of an era and this one just didn't do it), vague plot movement (I'm an avid reader and found myself really confused as to what in the world was going on), hard to follow dialogue (especially when the ghosts were talking!).
Overall, I'm giving it 3 stars because I'm sure I have a student or two who is going to love it, but it just didn't do it for me.

I really liked a lot of what was going on, but at times subplots and details felt scattered and random, and it was hard to attach new information to existing narrative, which, honestly, is a lot like my family history, and as her note states she was interested in the kinds of stories families tell about themselves, so I’d say that “wait but I thought” feeling this book gave me frequently matches up well with her intentions.
That being said, Fox/wolf remains the biggest remaining question mark. Like what was the point? Animal companion?
I did also find it helpful to go back and reread the first chapter after finishing.
Fun and fast to read, overall. Mind blown by how much of it seems to be rooted in real experiences.

Compelling, intriguing and hard to describe, but I very much enjoyed it!
So good! I love the blending of historical fiction with a ghost story. So unexpected.
3.5 stars. I think I was taken in my the cover, this book wasn't at all what I though it was. I enjoyed it, but sort of wanted to punch the dad in the face.
Different
A good book. I wasn't sure what I was expecting but this puppy me in with a good story. Now that I found that it's based on a real life I like it even better.

YES YES YES: magical realism, ghosts, 40s Chicago...another great story from Laura Ruby.
