I passed this one along to my mom too. We both enjoyed it. I think her characters are fascinating. The plots lean a bit more toward the sci-fi/fantastical than what I usually read, but once I decide to just go with her, I love her style.
Sorry, didn't do much for me. The plot was weird, which is fiine if it can pull the reader in, but this book did not. It was intriguing enough to keep reading, but I was glad to be done.
The ending threw me for a bit of a loop, but over all an enjoyable read.
My favorite character in this book: Highgate Cemetery
My favorite part of this book: probably the last few pages
Like so many books, I had been looking forward to reading this one. It was just very slow and painful to read. I didn't really connect with any of the characters. I was intrigued by Martin, but there really wasn't enough of him.
The Time Traveler's Wife was filled with so much emotion and creativity and this was just so different. It had none of that. I will admit that this book does have some creativity with a twist, it just comes too late in the story. I would have liked that to happen earlier and know more of the story from there...especially life in Highgate towards the end of the book. (If you read it, you'll know what I mean ;)
I love the paranormal and this touches on it...just not as much as I would have liked.

I liked and did not like this book...some characters and plot lines were more compelling than others. I think that some of the relationships were not as convincing or as developed as I would have liked them to be.
I hated HATED the Time Traveler's Wife. So I did not expect to like this book at all and to complain loudly to my book group for making me read it. But I thought it was a huge improvement over her last book, one with an interesting plot and well-thought out characters. The ideas of twins and the complexities than come from relationships with too much togetherness and duality was interesting to explore. I also really liked her conception of a ghost's life and their state of being and progression. Once the plot takes a strange turn toward the end, though, she lost me a little--especially with having Martin get close to cheating on his wife--that seemed very out of character for him. I'm not entirely sure what to make of the conclusion, but I liked the journey and it gave me plenty to chew on.
I wasn’t in the right mood for this book but I will probably revisit it later.
I really wanted to love this book as much as I loved Time Traveler's Wife, and I was thinking before I read it that perhaps it had gotten bad reviews because people were wanting more of the same, and it was different, etc. No. That's not the reason. The reason for me is that none of the characters are likable and I didn't care what happened to them, with the exception of Martin, who turned out to be sort of a peripheral character anyway. Every choice these people made annoyed me and/or made no sense. I kept hoping to like this book, and I just... didn't.
While it doesn't have quite the emotional impact of her previous novel, this is a thoroughly enjoyable ghost story set in and around Highgate Cemetery in London. I can't quite go to five stars because I was bothered by the event that makes up the climax of the book. It felt rushed and not thought out. Up until that point all relevant characters had been almost overly introspective and spent most of their time mulling over every decision in their day to day lives. And then one puts forward a fairly shocking idea and they express brief doubts but almost trip over each other in their rush to carry out the plan. What happens is a brilliant plot twist, and perhaps the rushing into it (almost jarringly), after the slower, thoughtful pace of the book up to that point, was intentional.
