Pippa always, ALWAYS, brings a HUGE smile to my face and she has once again made me smile, laugh, and chortle through her newest book.

What is it about Growly Bears and Sunshine Girls that makes such addictive reading? Personally, I love making frowns turn upside down, probably because I live with my own grouchy man and live to see those rare smiles, just like Tillie Jean.

The pranks, the family, the love, and of course the grumpy baseball player, it all made for a wonderful addition to Pippa's already fantastic interconnected series'.

Whether you want to put Grouchy Player Next Door in the Shipwreck series, the Fireballs series, or the Boy Band series, they all fit. There is a character that makes an appearance from each of those worlds and they all made me a happy, happy reader. GPND can be read as a complete standalone if you want to get to know a lot of new characters, but if you are fan of Pippa's then jump in and enjoy the ride.

Tillie Jean is a Rock, not in the sense that she is someone to lean on for support, although she is because she's awesome, but she is related to Cooper Rock and Grady Rock, so she literally is a Rock (ok, once again, not a literal stone)...ok moving on. TJ is loved by everyone in town. Like her brothers, she is Miss Sunshine and there to always give a helping hand, so when Max Cole blately and instantly dislikes her (going back four years- yes, she's been trying for four years) she tries everything to get him to like her, unfortunately a prank gone very, very wrong doesn't help on getting to lesson Max's less grouchy side.

Max Cole will smile and flirt with pretty much everyone, everyone except Tillie Jean Rock. He knows better than to even think about engaging with his teammates' sister. Cooper tells every rookie every season never, ever to even think about his dating his sister....so yeah, Max knows better. However, when Max ends up renting the house next to her during the off season, their close quarters make for interesting living engagements , that quickly escalate to prank wars and it's hard to keep Trouble Jean out of his mind.

This is another huge win for Pippa Grant that brought a huge smile to my face. I loved revisiting past characters, while also meeting new ones and of course my favorite part was revisiting Shipwreck. I could seriously live in this small, wacky town.

How does Pippa Grant do it? I've read a great many of Pippa Grant’s books and more often than not, I end up with my stomach hurting from trying not to laugh and wake up my husband. The absurd situations she puts her characters in are extraordinary and never repeated. Meeting Pippa Grant is now on my bucket list.

So, that will be the end of my fangirling.

*REVIEW

Chapter 1 opens with Tillie Jean hiding in her brother’s house so she can play a practical joke on him when he returns except, the person she ends up pranking is not her brother but one of his teammates and good friends. The problem being: Max doesn’t like Tillie. He despises her. He doesn’t go around her and, if forced, he acts grumpy when he does see Tillie, he is a complete jerk. Tillie in her own fun-spirited way flirts with him just to irritate both him and her brother. These actions continue on and off throughout the book, especially the pranks. And believe me… Tillie Jean gets as good as she gives.

I lost count of all the reasons Max dislikes “Trouble” Jean, as he calls her but they were numerous. Each is actually a reason he loves her but fears for his job and life should he and TJ get together. TJ has two older brothers, one who is reasonable and makes his living as a baker. The other is an overprotective but loving brother who, you guessed it, plays hockey.

I love the way the author is able to blend these characters flawlessly. Each one has a separate demeanor and their mannerisms create truly authentic characters. You are pulled in to their lives quickly, but with this book, the romance is a slow burn that kept me turning pages well into the night.

*OBJECTIVE

As mentioned above, the author creates memorable characters whose repartee is fun, witty, and at times a bit sad. Both Tillie Jean and Max Cole narrate in first person. Each chapter begins by telling who is narrating and a short line about what is to come. The writing is filled with witticisms and is easy to read. I am envious of the author’s wit and creativity. I’ve yet to read a book of hers I don’t like.

*SHORT QUOTE
I squat into position at the top of the stairs, as hidden as I can be while still seeing my target, Nerf blaster locked and loaded, waiting while he fumbles with his keys.

For the record?

It’s not easy to hide at the top of a curved staircase. I’m on my belly now, half-angled behind the wall of the hallway to his guest bedrooms, peering between the slats of the banister, hoping all my target practice pays off.

Dark hair in the foyer…

…a rapid blast of modified foam darts at the six balloons floating in the space above the door.

The other balloons are bursting in a steady, shiny, beautiful pink glitter spray that’s splashed on the walls, exploding from its nylon shell and raining down like a spring shower, coating the walls, making the air sparkle, and dusting all that dark hair as Cooper’s lifting his head. “What the–“

And in the span of a heartbeat, before he can finish that sentence, I realize my mistake.

My terrible, horrible, very bad miscalculation.

The Grumpy Player Next Door
Copper Valley Fireballs, Book 3
By: Pippa Grant
Narrated by: Savannah Peachwood, Wen Ross

Pippa Grant always brings a smile to my face! She has so much humor laced in her books, it makes them fly by and keeps me engaged in the story. This third book in the Copper Valley Fireballs is enemies to lovers, brother’s best friend and a sports romance too! All things I love included as we get to know Tillie Jean and her grumpy neighbor, Max. She has had a love hate relationship with him since he came on the Fireballs, and she just cannot figure out why. When he walks into a prank meant for TJ’s brother, our fun begins. If it can happen between these two, it does, creating an awkwardness that is just the right amount of foreplay. But no matter the situation, this slow burn romance is keeping the embers low as Max keeps holding back. The question is why? What will happen if the two get involved? Will try team be ok with it? And TJ’s brother? And what is really the reason he Max is hesitant? Chemistry, pranks, glitter, sassy parrot, family and that small town feel, Grant has us laughing and falling in love. It’s fun and flirty, frustrating and hysterical. And the characters are lovable. You can’t help but love this one, it’s my favorite of this series!

Narrated by Savannah Peachwood and Wen Ross, we are treated to a team that knows exactly how to bring humor and love alive. Peachwood is perfect as the independent, stubborn, yet lovable Tillie Jean. Ross has a warmth in his voice that I love, but he can create that standoff feel that Max definitely puts out. Incredible comedic timing and a great complimenting of voices, this team is a fantastic casting and a wonderful listen.

Slow burn for me.. the pranks were a little bit out there. Max had his issues with committing and other issues dealing with his past. Story was funny in some places.

The town of Shipwreck and the Rock family are just too awesome to believe. Tillie Jean Rock beloved younger sister of Cooper and Grady has been flirting with Max, her brother’s teammate on the Fireballs for the last 4 years. Max is a starting pitcher who had a rough childhood, doesn’t believe he is good enough for more than one-night stands and suffers from anxiety.

When Max first meet Tillie Jean he got an eyeful and the wrong impression of her, before learning she was Cooper Rock’s younger sister and off limits. Cooper is his best friend ever and Max has been resisting his attraction to Tillie Jean for four long years. This winter he has moved to Shipwreck along with several Fireball teammates to workout and train together to build more team cohesion so they can build on their first winning season. Tillie Jean is his neighbor and is becoming his kryptonite.

Tillie Jean and Max alternate dancing around each other, aggravating and antagonizing and prancing each other. More importantly, over the winter months in Shipwreck they become friends and eventually more, but is it a winter fling and scheduled to be over when Max leaves for Spring Training or is built to last a lifetime?

Pippa brings all the hilarity in this brother’s best friend/teammate slash enemies-to-lovers, grumpy guy/sunny girl romance. Dirty talking parrots, cockblocking goats and glitter bombs galore.

I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Grumpy bear

I absolutely loved Max and it's story. The laugh out loud moments were great and abundant. Pippa Grant really knows how to keep the fun going in this series. I absolutely love how she writes these books.
