I was apprehensive in continuing the series, but I'm glad I did. I gave this 3.5 round up to 4 stars. I think it is definitely A LOT better than the first book What Lies Beyond the Veil I think we can take out the "filler" part of What Lies Beyond the Veil and just slap it in front of this 498-page book and we can still make a decent length book.

The beginning was a little repetitive. How many times were we going to see Caelum vs. Estralla's "You're mine cuz blah blah mate bond blah blah fate." "No, I'm not." "Yes, you are." "I hate you." and then they fuck (90% of the time very violently). However, once the two worked out their differences and their goal moved towards the bigger picture for the both of them for the rest of their possibly eternal life, things got better. Caelum learned to back off on the alphahole-ness and trust Estrella to make her own decisions and do her own thing. Estrella learned a little more about herself as she was able to step outside the rigid confines placed by society.

This book finally answered a lot of questions left over from the first book. The ending was an emotional rollercoaster rivaling Maas. While the cliffhanger at the end was not so jarring that you needed to read the next book right away, you would still want to find out what would happen next as you are now invested in Estrella and Caelum's story.

Spice scale (as defined by Mysterious Galaxy):

ALL I WANT TO DO IS SHOUT SPOILERS FROM THE TOP OF MY LUNGS BUT ALSO I WANT THIS TO VE SPOILER FREE

My only complaint with book one was that it felt very similar to From Blood and Ash, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, FBAA is just a sacred comfort read for me.

But holy shit, do I love the way book 2 separated itself from that feeling for me. I love the turn this series took!

I liked this second book in the series alot more than the first. A lot less cringey moments, or maybe I was just numb to it. I like it enough to finish the series. I’m starting to like the characters more and the plot is *thickening*

Okay, like wow.
First off, that cliffhanger. I need book three like now. I have to say I think I love Caelum even more now than I did in book one!

I am only giving 4 stars because there were some things in the book that made me cringe. There are some words and sayings I am not a fan of and they were used a lot in this book, that I won't say as to not spoil anything. Overlooking these things, though I really did enjoy this book and am very excited to read the next book in the series.

With this book, I can see what people mean when they say it is very similar to ACOTAR. I did get that vibe during some of this book. Not a bad thing by the way. I enjoyed ACOTAR so for me it's okay that it gave me those vibes.

If you liked book one, then I recommend reading this book. We learn so much more in it about Faerie and we get to see lots more of Caelum and Estrella together. Also, there is definitely a lot more smut in this book than the first (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), so if you like lots of smut definitely read this.

Also, I do recommend reading the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book, as they're very important.

Thank you to the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book is really disjointed. Mab isn’t a very good villain. There is a lot of torture, it’s pretty gruesome, but the torture chosen does t have a purpose. A villain that allows her victim to heal and be treated well in-between sessions? That’s weird. And ineffective.
