This was such an odd little read.

I loved the world that was built in so few pages. The dynamic between the children and their parents was so interesting and really brought back the more insane parts of childhood/youth in general.

I kind of jumped in not knowing much about the story and was so surprised with where it went. The setting was so comfy and almost nostalgic at times, and then it got real weird and uncomfy which was so interesting. The backdrop of climate disasters and that sense of impending and prolonged doom that no one, not even those who you traditionally look to for comfort and guidance, have the answers to or even know how to handle it themselves. It's like, that feeling you get when you realize your parents are just people who don't really know what they're doing and they're just faking it just like you are, that's what this book makes me feel. Very interesting read for sure!

a funny, cynical dystopia. the world seems to be ending, but it's all rather vague, which i appreciated. i kept getting the children mixed up, but i appreciated their characterization when there was some. the pacing and the dialogue were amusing and believable, as was the suddenness of the events.

there was a deus ex machina moment toward the end, which i found ludicrous.

While I respect this book, I’m not sure how much I actually liked it. It’s bleak but the pace is so swift, the emotion so arm’s length, that it’s hard to take in. It all somehow works though. TOB book 9 done.

Shades of Lord of the Flies, this allegorical novel is a painful read. It’s hard to witness the cruelty, wastefulness, and depravity depicted here. How can the parents be so irresponsible, the children so cynical and mean? In order to accept this story you must leave literal reality at the door, and flow with the metaphor; then it will make more sense. This is a story about climate change, humankind’s selfish destruction of the planet, poured through the Biblical metaphor.

The book is well-written. So why only a 3-star rating? I felt the allegory was just too heavy-handed, the Biblical metaphors too obvious. What is the author’s goal here? Is she trying to educate about climate change? Is she trying to convert non-believers? I can’t imagine that this book will change anyone’s mind about the reality of climate change. More likely, non-science-believing Christians will either be offended by the “distortion” of Biblical teachings or be focused on thinking about those stories themselves.

Still, it’s great that climate change is becoming a backdrop (or center-stage) for novels. This is the reality of our world, and we can only speculate about what our society will look like in the future.

A fever dream -- at some points it felt like engaging with a blended fan fiction piece with angsty journal written by a teenager, at other times it had a rare kind of shocking elegance to it. I'm glad I stuck through to the end. For those a fan of dystopian, I would recommend. Part of me wishes it made more sense, and part of me gets that it's just one of those things that is maybe best expressed through total its total oddness. I'd be lying if I said it's not memorable.

I agree with other reviews that the diversity of the cast is lacking, though that may be intentional as well. I'm beginning to assume it was, to show a certain kind of specific soul sickness that belongs only to the super-wealthy.
