I just find both main characters really unlikeable. I thought about trying to stick it out to see if they both have an arc that grow from, but I'm not sure I'm patient enough to keep going.

This YA Shakespeare retelling was such a wonderful read. I loved both Viola and Jack's characters and the way they both grew throughout the book. There was honestly so much character growth packed into this, and I enjoyed that (most of the time) the pair were able to communicate in really mature ways. Their character flaws and the problems they faced were realistic, age appropriate, and handled perfectly by the author. I especially loved the feminism commentary that was pervasive in Viola's story. Vi's friendship with Olivia was also a highlight for me.

4.25*. I loved the main character in this book. Viola is world-weary beyond her years (but with good reasons), but also believably young. It's a heartbreaking combination though. But I also found myself hoping that at least her taking-no-nonsense-from-anyone attitude would never change.
Her entire family was a delight, and I was sad that we don't get to see more of them on page.
Jack was harder for me to envision. He seemed to me like several people rolled into one, and given a backstory that didn't quite fit how that already somewhat inconsistent character behaved.
Consequently their relationship didn't make a whole lot of sense. However, scene by scene they did illustrate what a good relationship work could look like, and I appreciated that aspect of the story a lot.
I would not call this a 'Twelfth Night' retelling though. It might have been loosely inspired by the plot of the Shakespearean play, but the story here is all its own.

Yeah whatever I loved this book. It’s not going to be for everyone, but it was certainly for me. This is not a romance (tho two people do fall in love). This book is about anger, per the author.
I love Vi. I understand her anger because it resembled much of mine. But she is better in so many ways. She’s brave and ambitious and cutthroat and funnnnnny. She was so funny. She won’t just *give* you a moment of peace, and I found it wildly entertaining. Yeah some people are gonna complain about the sweet summer child, etc. phrasing. Whatever. It didn’t bother me because it’s accurate.
Jack was a delightful POV to have. I loved watching him open up to the possibilities of life. He had his Troy Bolton moment. Watching someone learn fandom was adorably fun. I loved how he was so present in life even when he was uncomfortable. Also, I just love a dual POV for these kinds of stories.
Yay for Shakespeare. Yay for theater kids and nerds and bitches and trying new things.
