Stephen King is absolutely an amazing storyteller. And he's created a wonderful young protagonist in this, but I found the story a bit lacking. I read this to my 14yo daughter as an intro to Stephen King (although I read her The Eyes of the Dragon a few years ago) and it was a little disappointing. Not my favourite Stephen King novel.

I'm confused with all of the high ratings for this book. It wasn't terrible but I thought it would be a little scarier or have a more realistic fear factor. However, any of the suspenseful/scary elements were clearly the mind of a 9 year old girl who was scared being stuck out in the woods with a wild imagination and therefore just came across as silly or insignificant, which they all were in the end. Some of the survival element offered suspense but I've read better books addressing that type of storyline. Meh. At some parts of the book following her journey felt a little boring and dragging-on-ish.

Funny people are giving this a low rating because it's "not scary." Um, it's not a horror story. Stephen King does write things other than horror. If this had any other person's name on it it'd be classified as a YA survival story, which it is. And a tootin' good one too :)

I didn’t think I’d like this book as much as I did. I haven’t read much of King (Green Mile and The Stand we fab, but I couldn’t get into the Dark Tower), and I’m not a horror fan by any means. And yet I loved this book. While King gives his 9yo MC ridiculously enviable vocabulary and comprehension skills, I think he did a superb job with the inner dialogue a kid lost in the woods might experience (been lost in a few myself, tho nothing to write home about). Touchdown for King! (Sportsing isnt my thing either, obvi.)

This is one of King's lesser works but still an average book that has some enjoyable moments. There is no issue with the writing, but the story does get dull at points. There is nothing particularly exciting happening and I found the supernatural angle to be hit and miss. This seemed more like a novella in a collection than a standalone novel.

Holy hell. What a wild ride. I was sitting on the roof of my house with traffic from the road in the background and still got chills. I just don't understand why this book has poor reviews. Apart from being rich with description that just bursts forth from each page, this is a close look into the mind of someone clinging to sanity by a thread, a brave experiment by Stephen King to get inside the terrified mind of a child losing her grip on reality.
