More a philosophical meditation than a novel, but nevertheless a fascinating read. Made me think more than usual, made me think about the world around me.

This is the second Kundera novel I've read this summer, and I can't tell yet if I really like him specifically or if I just need to read more French/European literary novels. Whatever it is, I really enjoyed this book—not so much for the particular story lines or characters (though I loved the Czech entomologist and would read an entire novel, a la Knausgaard, about the fictional Milan Kundera and his wife Vera)—but after reading a lot of books over the years in a lot of different genres this one had me thinking over and over: I didn't know a novel could do THAT.

I was hoping to like this one more, as I liked the idea of following 2 pairs of lovers in different times, but it turns out that we hardly follow the pair from 2 centuries ago, although their story might have been more interesting, and as for the rest we are stuck between a modern pair that are basically imbeciles, and the philosophical rumninations of the author. It bored me a lot.
Fortunately, this is a short story  and it wasn't difficult to read.

This is a good time!

If my life was not so busy, I could easily read this in a single sitting. This is a philosophy book tied under the guise of a loose plot involving two romantic entanglements. One of them is from the 1700s and the other is from the present day. It is told by the author as a narrator, who seems to be able to witness these things from the château, which is their shared location.

This is my first Kundera, and I find his prose elegant. This is very easy to read and rather funny. I was not a huge fan of the modern day romantic encounter, which got a little ridiculous and the people fairly detestable, but besides that this is a pretty fun read!
