Pretty good murder mystery, set in the "hidden" town of Rockton in the wilds of Canada. I like how Armstrong has set up the town as an escape for people of dubious backgrounds, which allows for a greater than normal proportion of violent acts, explaining why they need a detective like Casey for such a small town.

Lots of twists and turns, and I was kept guessing about the guilty party until near the end. Slow moving in parts, but entertaining enough to keep me occupied while I was home with a cold.

I received an advance copy from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

I love this series from Kelly Armstrong. The town of Rockton just seem to come alive off of the pages. I would never be able to live there but I find the town and all its inhabitants facinating. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

Dnf. I really enjoyed the first book but I think A Darkness Absolute is absolutely too dark for me. Rape, psycho and socio paths, imprisonment, possible incest (I bailed before I got a definite answer to this one), or maybe none of that but a very sick delusional person.

Too much for me. Not even a puppy can save this, cos all the while I'm worrying that the puppy's going to meet a nasty end.

Even though this series is dark and disturbing, I can't stop reading it! The characters are intriguing (complex and flawed but definitely root-worthy), the setting is unique (atmospheric and inherently dangerous), and the plots are engrossing (twisty and compelling). This second installment is just as tense and exciting as the first and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

A Darkness Absolute is the second book in the Casey Duncan series. I enjoy this series so far. The characters are real and interesting. There is no lack of action and each page has its level drama... the good kind. Casey Duncan is a detective who ends up in a town where unrelated criminals and victims pay to hide. The town is in Yukon wilderness and is surrounded by danger. Some of these threats are natural and others are of the human kind. Casey has plenty opportunities to use her detective skills, and she also finds herself targetted by the cases she investigates.

Kelley Armstrong is one of my favourite authors. I love her writing style and how she develops her stories and keeps you guessing to the end. Can't wait for the next book.

I'm a huge fan of this series, and I really liked this second installment. The only thing that I might have preferred was for the killer to be outside of Rockton. I actually suspected the killer from the beginning simply because they were able to narrow it down so quickly. The story was still well-written with plenty to keep me entertained despite feeling pretty confident in who the killer was. I really like Casey and Eric's relationship. It's perfect for them, and I like how they are so communicative in a realistic way. I'm interested in seeing where the next story takes us because I would really really like something with the hostile's or even just the normal settler's outside of Rockton. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars and can't wait for the next one!

A Darkness Absolute (Rockton/Casey Duncan #2) by Kelley Armstrong
Date Read: 18 Sept 2023
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I find the town of Rockton just as much a main character as Casey, Eric, Will, et al. I really enjoy the setting and the concept of this mysterious town, and I like seeing how Casey is settling into things.

There were some very tense moments making it worth sticking it through; this book felt long towards the middle, and there were times the writing seemed to go in circles…but overall, it was a good read and I plan on continuing with the series.
