There is a lot I appreciated about this novel - the exploration of code switching, the justification of slavery and other evils by white men philosophers. The reveal - which I will not reveal - though, comes absolutely out of nowhere. There are moments that I felt this reveal could be hinted at and explored that would have made the revelation so powerful while also adding depth and meaning to the idea of code switching, slavery, survival, race, and passing.

In fact, while the first half meanders and ponders (in a good way) the second half of the novel feels rather rushed.

My first Percival Everett book and a highly recommended one at that!

Really enjoyed this spin on a Twain classic. Everett takes the time to add depth to the originally, frankly racist and one note character of Jim in Huckleberry Finn. It's fast paced, tense, dark, and cathartic.

Really good, really interesting, very vividly written and plotted. Jim is a great character. And also the book is basically just relentlessly horrible horrible horrible.

I hadn't read Huckleberry Finn so not sure if I missed out on any details, nods, references, subtext or whatever. I imagine it'd just add more depth.

having not read the adventures of huckleberry finn since high school, i was a bit lost at the beginning in my effort to locate where we were in the larger story. after that first few chapters however the book largely stands on its own. everett was able to add a lot of depth and layers to an already exciting story, and it of course is nice to see James with a bit more agency.

simultaneously an easy read (experience-wise, it was a page-turner, highly consumable, gripping), and a hard read (subject-wise—i kept having to pause and sit in the horrors and trials James went through). there’s not much i can say about it that hasn’t already been said, but as someone who grew up loving huck finn & tom sawyer, this novel is so brilliant and is so obviously imbued with care and craft.
