Amazing book for sure but I think reading his other two books first (The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns) definitely set my expectations too high for this one, I found the multiple POVs and constantly switching to be a little bit confusing and distracting from what I felt like was the true main story. I don't think it enhanced the story as much as just added unnecessary details.

A very moving story that honestly, involves many characters. I could have done without a few just because I found their in depth character development more of an extraneous detail. The story jumps around through time and spaces (USA, Afghanistan, France and Greece (and a few others) so it is definitely not a book you can put down for a few weeks and come back to. He introduced new characters near the last 100 pages, which I found a bit annoying but, in the end, it was worth it. In summary, I felt it was beautifully written and enjoyed how the many stories and characters were intricately woven together.

I liked the chapters when characters were more fleshed out but I think the compilation of several short POVs made it confusing at times to follow. I felt no real affinity to the characters due to the time jumps and changes in characters. I guess some characters were meant to just make you think and only had a short part to play and others were only rounded out in the very end. I liked the storytelling but the characters just didn’t do it for me :(

Lots of characters which made it hard to keep up with, especially as they all were loosely connected to each other (apparently.)
Some plots took the whole book to round-off and some were resolved in approximately 2 portions of a chapter.
As there were so many characters I had a weak affinity for any one story and really feel like each tale deserves it own standalone book. Overall another good read (:
I didn’t cry tho so what’s the point?

And the Mountains Echoed is not one story about a brother and a sister. It is a mosaic of echoes stretching generations and continents. Each part tells a different story from the perspective of a different character yet still connected by an echo of a previous one.

This book is about selfishness and selflessness, about survival and sacrifice, and about never ending loss. And within that loss, there is an occasional smile and a never ending willingness, somewhere by somebody not to give up.
