Cautiously interested still. There’s some manga staples here I dislike, like a pervy teacher, of course there’s a teacher who says stuff like after she graduates they can be friends with benefits :\ gross. The actual plot is quite slow: aliens came to earth and destroyed a few buildings and some people died but the attack halted.

That was three years ago. Most of the time it’s two girl best friends who just… hang out, living with the spectre of a giant floating saucer and it’s little minion saucers floating around Tokyo. People have adapted to this new state of affairs, and young people, like the girls, hate the normalcy of it. They’d rather the Penny drop and have war or be wiped out, than the tension of not knowing if there will even be a future, and if working hard will be something worth putting energy and money into. It’s a fairly pat allegory for seemingly disaffected you and the eco disaster we are marching towards, though this is far more literal.

I’d read another volume, I think. It’s a lot more low-key than I expected. The artwork is great and the ending was ominous and possibly a cliffhanger, depending how it’s interpreted? Slightly baffling? Confused? Intrigued? I am these things.

Teenage existentialism is arguably overplayed, but rarely have I felt it expressed so honestly to the way I experienced it. These children suffer the changing of the world exactly how I remember being in high school during 9/11, with a shrugging indifference that would flare up into anger when you realized how it was being used as a cudgel by those in power. But mostly you're just worried about video games and what you're going to do after high school.

I'm worried future volumes will have a plot, I almost wish this volume existed all on its own forever in this space where these friends hang in the space between school days and worry about a hammer that seems fated to never actually fall upon the world. Bigh mood.

Was habe ich gerade gelesen?

Let me first start by saying, this is the first Manga I have ever read. Also I'm not really into comics or graphic novels either. My first experience reading a graphic novel was with the "Saga" series, and it definitely did not disappoint. This being my first time reading a Manga I had low expectations. I usually prefer art in color, but I fell in love with the design and characters in the story. Inio Asano's art work is quite impressive and unique. I really enjoyed the character relationships especially the girls friendships, and dark humor that kept the story funny and interesting. I'm really looking forward to continuing the series and seeing where the characters will end up.

Such a unique vibe, love how genuinely weird these girls are and the artwork is so lavish. Library just got all the volumes of this in so I'll probably read through it over the next few months in preparation for the final one.

This work is set 3 years after the initial shock of an alien invasion, and well, in the current time, the mothership is kind of still there. The center of the story is a friend group of girls who, even if a giant alien ship is constantly hovering over the city they live in, still have to go to school and go on with their normal lives.

The work was written before the pandemic, but the aspect of living in changing times (the pandemic, the climate crisis) but also living one's normal life nonetheless resonates with me. I'm curious how the two parts of the story, the mystery of the alien invasion and the slice-of-life part about the girls, will connect, and the unique art style supports the story well.
