This work is set 3 years after the initial shock of an alien invasion, and well, in the current time, the mothership is kind of still there. The center of the story is a friend group of girls who, even if a giant alien ship is constantly hovering over the city they live in, still have to go to school and go on with their normal lives.

The work was written before the pandemic, but the aspect of living in changing times (the pandemic, the climate crisis) but also living one's normal life nonetheless resonates with me. I'm curious how the two parts of the story, the mystery of the alien invasion and the slice-of-life part about the girls, will connect, and the unique art style supports the story well.

this book was suuuuuper confusing for me!!! I had to read it twice in the same week , it was good , but I don't think I enjoyed it as much as I thought I would, because I didn't quite understand what was actually happening beside the fact that there's an alien ship that appeared all of a sudden in the sky and that Tokyo has to live with it and protect its inhabitants but it felt like it wasnt bothering a lot of people and also the daily life of two high school girls but I loved the drawings so much. Also the friendship of the two main characters was amazing.
(I suck at reviews but this is legit what I think)

To give you an idea of the vibe of this volume, let me go off on a tangent ...

I remember hearing one person's account of the Cuban Missile Crisis. At the time, this person was a student and they wondered if there was any point in doing their school work, since this was potentially the end of the world. This tension--working towards a future when you cannot see whether one will exist for you--is played out in this volume. There's also a hint of District 9, as an alien space ship appears and then appears to do very little. This volume shows how eventually disaster and the abnormal can become business as usual, and how this stress permeates your life (gosh, don't know what that's like).

I won't be continuing the series but only because I'm not the right reader for it. This was an interesting one but not exactly uplifting.

I thought this was bit of a letdown. Aliens have parked a giant spaceship over Japan, and three years later, life goes on. Thousands died on 8/31, and Kadode is struggling to find meaning to her life. Her father disappeared during the first wave of the alien assault, her mother is an emotional and mental wreck, and the future doesn't have much meaning. Kadode and her friends hang out, play video games, and try to pretend that a big black cloud of doom isn't hanging over their heads.

While the art is very detailed, I thought some of the characters looked downright weird. I pity Inio Asano's assistants, because the backgrounds are jam-packed with detail, and every panel is full of illustration, screentone, and, to me, noise. The panels looked cluttered and felt claustrophobic.

The story didn't engage me, and I kept waiting for something to happen. I usually enjoy character driven stories, but for whatever reason, I did not find this compelling.

The art was fantastic but bloody hell what a weird story. Not sure about this one yet.
