this is a story about love ultimately. between Allison, a girl trying to find herself, and Marla, a woman losing herself.
the format of verse is perfect for this story as it moves around seamlessly between now when Allison has run away from her father and is squatting in marla's house and building a relationship with her, and Allison's memories of her fathers abuse. the motifs throughout and the connections between past and present and perfectly formed and emotionally expressed through the metaphors and other aspects of the poetry as Allison finds herself, works through the violence she has experienced her whole life and is becomes a person that Marla needs as Marla gives her what she needs in return. Their relationship is really loving and kind and really made me cry throughout. Marla has dementia and it was handled with such care (as was Allison's trauma) and she didn't always understand who Allison was but they grew to feel safe together and care about each other and have fun and be what the other needed in this small part of their lives. I loved reading Allison's development and piecing her and Marla together through the little vignette like poems:) I just really quickly had a deep love and connections to these two characters so it was really love for me.
also the audiobook narration was great. I enjoyed it even more in this format I think because it added to the emotion and also made it not go by as quickly as it would if I had read with my eyes which would've made the experience include more skimming just because of the verse format. The audiobook caused me to pause and reflect on the events and Allison's character multiple times that really added to my deeper love of the characters and the story.
it was just really beautifully written and a story of hope and love and kindness through trauma. And finding yourself on the other side. the ending was sad but hopeful about what is to come for both of them.

this book had potential, but i don’t think it was carried out very well. the fact that it was told in verse literally had no point except to be a little pretentious and ~quirky~. the plot was interesting but everything happened so fast that i actually got whiplash, and all of the characters were super flat and i didn’t care about them at all. the whole thing with lucy was out of place and honestly her character didn’t add anything to the story. i feel like nothing was actually explained in the book and the ending was rushed. disappointed that a protagonist with my name had to do me dirty like this smh :/
This is the third Crossan book I've read, following Here is the Beehive and Moonrise (YA). Her books have a fantastic 'feel'. This one is visually more similar to Moonrise -- the structure of the pages -- but all three relate their stories in a non-linear style. I'm actually surprised by how much I have enjoyed them, as I typically like traditional fiction. But her works are a joy to have discovered.

A little strange at first, but then quickly realised the writing style fit perfectly to the characters thoughts.
4.5 stars!
So emotional, but also very cute?
Sarah Crossan's books are always written in a way that touches me, this wasn't an exception. Emotional, raw and with characters who both are lost and help each other a bit with their lives. I found their interactions cute and I also liked that it dealt with dementia.
