Fantastic surprise

My friends were reading and enthusing over this book, so I picked it up. It’s the epitome of the grumpy one and the sunshine one, and the first 2/3 or so is mostly light and funny with the efforts of the golden rich boy trying to win over the closed-off poor boy with an unsavory past. In the last part of the book, that past has to be dealt with, and there is some angst but also love and growth all around.

This was my first book by this author, but definitely won’t be the last. I loved it.

Ugh. More later.

Back.

Audible version.

Narrator K.C. Kelly is an autobuy for me. His voice is one I could listen to everyday!

The story of Cade and Aiden starts out slow and honestly I was okay with that. I got the whole Cade is from the wrong side of the tracks who would never be good enough for golden child Aiden.

I loved the scene where Cade goes home and faces his parents. Priceless!

I hated or disliked intensely, the last 1/6 of the book. Aiden's mom was a complete Bitch and Aiden's initial reaction to Cade's confession was just about unforgivable.

I love me some Kate Sherwood but this book - not up to her usual standards.

I can always count on Kate Sherwood to fill my quota of wounded, strong but silent, emotionally stunted men and the pushy but well-intentioned extroverts who love them anyway and this book was no exception. Cade and Aiden's courtship was completely adorable; I just about melted into a puddle of goo over Aiden's overtures. (If anyone could point me towards a handsome man/mobile sushi cart, I'd be much obliged.) There aren't many quibbles I could make about the story except the fact that you could spot the ending coming a mile away. Regardless, I was very much entertained from beginning to end and I expect other readers to feel the same.

It's me not the book. This has got so many rave reviews.

Another book that has been sleeping in my kindle for years, I finally read it. Yay!

I had read the short story that composes the middle of this book when it came out, but I don't think that detracted from my enjoyment. (There is an unexpected reveal in there, but it's not essential for it to be a surprise.) This is the story of Cade, son of unemployed alcoholic parents, who is determined not to be like them. He's going to hunker down and get through college no matter what it takes.

Aiden is the golden boy, from money and a loving home, a frat guy with no solid life plans. But he has a warm, open heart and he really wants to befriend Cade. And more.

I enjoyed the contrast between the guys. I loved some of Aiden's OTT antics as he tried to wedge a chink in Cade's solitary defensive wall. The back story worked for me. I did feel like the book ended too soon. There was a lot revealed over a short period, and saying "Oh, now that's all clear" didn't seem like enough to be a solid ending. I wanted the angst and ups and downs of really working past what should have been some lingering issues. Plus there were some real world consequences hinted at that might have been a hard thing to follow through with.
SpoilerWould Cade really out his past, to help some woman he doesn't know? What would be the consequences of that?
But it was, as always with this author, well written, enjoyable, with characters I cared about although not quite as deeply as some others of hers. (With Dan of [b:Dark Horse|8262408|Dark Horse (Dark Horse, #1)|Kate Sherwood|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1348228294s/8262408.jpg|13110316] still the heart-ripping best.)

This book had some issues with writing style, dialogue, continuity and even main character name mix up, but I really enjoyed it. 3.5 stars
