I read this book when I was a very young Christian and it did open my eyes to the fact that the spirit world is real. While I do not agree with much of the way the spirit world is taught in this book and would not recommend it, it was a page turner and fun read. If you take it as complete fantasy in a universe that probably doesn't exist, like Cloverfield or the Hunger Games or Star Wars, then you will probably enjoy it. Just don't consider it's theology to be solidly Biblical.

I don't care for Peretti's earliest books very well. They seem to lack the good points of his later ones and turn the fight between spiritual forces into something that can only turn out well if the saints pray enough. They feel to me to much like magic--if you believe hard enough the fairy won't die. I believe however that God has power without "help" from us. From a few things I've read Peretti agree this is a fault with some of his early books.
Anyway, the story line was catchy, the writing good, and I did enjoy the book.

Piercing the Darkness is a great continuation of Peretti's This Present Darkness as it interweaves the first book with this book. The writing was perfectly engaging and the action throughout the story did not disappoint.
I enjoyed the mingling of dramatic irony that Peretti made present throughout the entirety of the book, without leaving too much known to the reader. I also loved the change in perspectives throughout the chapters, bouncing between different characters as well as between humans and spirits.
As a Christin, I enjoy that this book shines a light on the spiritual warfare that is happening around us without us even knowing it. By putting it into a more actionable and entertaining story, Peretti is able to create a great book for people of all interests and ages.

Savior, a title angels would always behold and marvel about, but which only mankind could know and understand.
Very much like my review of the first book of this series (This Present Darkness). Very good story, though I would say not as good as the first. However, the struggle and development of the main character was more gripping even than what was done with the characters of the first. In all, these two books made a very good story. While I don't think that the way Satan works is almost ever as overtly sinister as the actions of the primary villains, I suppose the books wouldn't have held the same thriller factor without them. That would be my primary complaint, however. Definitely would recommend these books to someone who has read the Screwtape Letters, and vice versa.
If you liked This present darkness then you will like piercing the darkness. It’s a wonderful story of redemption and mercy. My only complaint is that for me it felt like the story took a while to build. There was a lot going on with several stories taking place at the same time. However by the end it all made sense. Really enjoyable read!
Well, this is the fourth or fifth time that I've read Piercing the Darkness, though it has been *many* years since my last perusal.
It is *obvious* that this book was written in the early '90s. That aside, it is still an enjoyable read. That said, reading it as a more well-rounded adult, outside the conservative Christian circles I was nutured in, the simplistic "demons under every doily" is a bit tiring.
Even with these limitations, I still find myself enjoying Peretti's writing style. Specifically, I loved the vivid description of Sally's conversion.
