Interesting writing style. Interesting story/premise. Sadly couldn't quite get into it, but this book had a hard act to follow (Indian Horse would not get out of my brain).

3.5 stars (grrr why can't we give 1/2 stars?). This book is far from what I would normally gravitate to. I really enjoyed the way the book is written and how the time periods are constantly jumping. There is much sorrow in this book and in Helen's life, I feel that her tragedies would have been to much to read through all at once, and the discontinuous nature of the novel allows relief from that. From my point of view there were 3 climaxes in the novel and by writing in this style they could all occur at the end of the novel rather than like a roller coaster. I would have liked to read more about John and Jane.

I started this book on the last day of our vacation in St. John's, NFLD. I liked being able to recognize locations and historical/cultural references thanks to our time there. Helen's husband dies on the Ocean Ranger disaster in 1982, and the novel looks at the everyday snippets of her life before and after his death. There are moments when her grief seems to swallow her up, and moments where she just keeps putting one foot in front of the other. I thought it was a beautiful story.

I had a little bit of a struggle getting into the story for the first few chapters, but then all of a sudden I was hooked and didn't want to put it down. The book is well written. It almost feels as though you are in Helen's kitchen, listening to her talk about her life story and how she's ended up where she is.

This book was passionate, gritty, lucid and beautiful.

The oil rig Ocean Ranger went down on February 15, 1082, all souls lost. February is about one family in the aftermath. Of living life after you loseSo happy that I did not give up on this book. The first few chapters were wrought with very strong language, and it was grating. That subsided and the remainder of the book was only peppered with traditional Newfoundland cursing.

February is set 25 years after the tragedy, but Moore shifts the action back and forth in time to offer snapshots of important moments in Helen's life, from meeting Cal, the love of her life, in the 1970s, to the day of the tragedy, and to her present-day life as a grandmother of two.

There is an amazing quote about loving someone who has died. I can't find it now but will listen to this book again someday and take better notice.

Written in the first person of several characters (Helen, John, Julie), February was surprisingly easy to follow. I realize this is not a favourite style for many people. But I'd suggest if you're having trouble reading it, get the Audio book .The Narrator does a superb job voicing everyone.

Excellent writing!

A very emotionally raw, well-written exploration into the lives of a family affected by the husband/father's death on an ocean liner twenty some years earlier. The flashbacks are interwoven with the wife and son's present day. Lots of subtle metaphor and every day dealings with such lasting effects. The prose is simple but so effective. Such a well-crafted novel.

Not a bad story but I think the author needs to learn more about 56 year old women. I felt like I was reading about a woman in her late 70's and it was so distracting it took away from the story.

Immensely talented writer. Loved this book, and "Alligator" as well.
