Beautifully written (the translation from Swedish was fantastic). Rich in imagery, deep in meaning. Something to chew on and gnaw away at. Fantastic discussion at book club afterwards. Highly recommend!

I ended up liking this book better than I thought I would. I really considered dropping it after the first 100 pages or so. Very bleak, these Swedish guys, very bleak.
But in the end, it really did turn out to be a study of redemption,and a tale that says that we are never too old to say we're sorry and work at reclaiming the life we have left.
I was put off by things that I thought were unnecessary to the story--the ever-growing anthill in the bedroom for one--but if you just let your mind float a little, it all makes more sense.
I don't know if this is a book I would recommend to everyone asking for "something good to read." Too quirky for that.

Un livre bien différent de ceux que j'ai l'habitude de lire de cet auteur, mais tout aussi plaisant. Il nous emporte avec lui dans ce voyage, on est ému, et on en redemande presque, même s'il nous fait réfléchir, une fois de plus, sur la vie menée et la façon de la mener...

I actually read it in French (copy found at the resort I was staying). First Mankell, an author I've been meaning to read for ages. Dark book, interesting message(s). Recommended. I'll read more Mankell!

I really enjoyed reading this but I'm not sure why. The book starts with the main character living, on his own, on an island - with the only contact being with his hypochrondriac postman. He chooses to live on his own due to an event in his life however, his 'peace' is disturbed by the appearance of an ex-girlfriend from 40 years earlier.
We then follow what happens over the course of a year and how the re-appearance of his ex-girlfriend, and what follows, impacts on him.
It's a book very different to anything I've read recently and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It's the first Henning Mankell novel I've read and I can't wait to read more (although I do understand that this is very different to his Wallender series of books).
The use of language makes this a very readable book with fantastic imagery throughout - a beautiful novel.

Întotdeauna mă simt mai singur când este frig.
Frigul de dincolo de fereastră îmi aminteşte de frigul izvorât din propriul trup. Sunt atacat din două direcţii, însă mă încăpăţânez să rezist. Acesta este motivul pentru care fac o gaură în gheaţă în fiecare dimineaţă. Dacă ar sta cineva cu un telescop pe gheaţa din golful încremenit şi ar vedea ce fac, s-ar gândi că sunt nebun şi că sunt pe cale de a-mi pregăti propria moarte. Un bărbat gol puşcă în frigul ce-ţi taie respiraţia, cu un topor în mână, făcând o gaură în gheaţă?
Bănuiesc, de fapt mai degrabă sper, că va apărea la un moment dat cineva acolo, afară, într-una dintre zilele astea, o umbră întunecată pe fondul acela în întregime alb – cineva care să mă vadă şi să se întrebe dacă va reuşi să mă oprească înainte să fie prea târziu. Însă nu-i nevoie să mă oprească, fiindcă nu am nici o intenţie să mă sinucid.
Într-o perioadă anterioară a vieţii mele, furia şi disperarea erau uneori atât de copleşitoare din pricina marii nenorociri ce mi se întâmplase, încât chiar m-am gândit să-mi pun capăt zilelor. Însă, în realitate, n-am încercat niciodată s-o fac. Laşitatea mi-a fost un companion fidel şi constant de-a lungul vieţii. Ca şi acum, şi-atunci mă gândeam că a fi în viaţă însemna că nu trebuie niciodată să slăbeşti strânsoarea şi să-ţi dai drumul. Viaţa este ca o cracă fragilă, deasupra unei prăpăstii. Stau atârnat de ea atâta timp cât am putere. În cele din urmă voi cădea, ca toată lumea, şi nu ştiu ce-o să mă aştepte. Oare e cineva acolo jos să mă prindă? Sau n-o să fie nimic, în afară de un hău nemilos şi rece, care să se năpustească rapid spre mine?
Gheaţa este aici, şi nu pentru scurt timp.

This started very intriguingly and I loved the feeling of place that Henkel provides, but after a strong start this novel lost me. This started going downhill once we left the island and never recovered for me. The main characters were just to self absorbed and frustrating and there wad insufficient point in their aactions. I haven't read any Wallander novels yet and maybe they are more my cup of tea.

I often didn't like the secondary characters' personalities and I definitely didn't always like the protagonist, but I very much liked how they wove into and through each other. The author did a lovely thing here with some very flawed men and women.
