3.5 stars. If only Kepnes would have provided a resolution, a cliffhanger, anything but a continuation of the bleakness. This story needed saving and it never happened. What the hell was wrong with Jon? And how did Roger “fix” him? These holes, in addition to the unrequited relationship of Chloe and Jon, really sucks the hope out of this book.

I started this one without a single glance at the synopsis. I knew it was Kepnes only other book aside from the You series, so I wanted in immediately. Again, I am blown away with her ability to infiltrate entirely a characters head space, despite how minor that role may be inside of the work. By far one of the most delightful writers I’ve read, even though she covers some quite dark themes. This one was a romance woven amongst a Lovecraft style centerpiece. The characters were often times wounded and tragic, with an underlying sweetness and devotion to each other. Carrig felt like he would have fit right in the You series as a person Joe encounters and despises. It’s hard to pinpoint how I felt about this one, but I enjoyed it.

Listen to me. Caroline Kepnes is great at what she does.
She has a voice, and lends that voice to incredible characters, and makes you love them. She pulls the human on to paper. She’s incredible.
She makes these hybrid stories out of pop culture that completely stand on there own. She is not a one trick pony. I hope she writes hundreds of books and I hope I get to read every single one.

This book is if Forrest and Jenny were the leads in the notebook, except Tom Hanks/Ryan Gossling is the Hulk. Who comes up with this? Who makes this work so well it swells your heart? Caroline Kepnes does, that’s who.

I feel like my copy of the book was missing chunks of pages because this really could have been good if some things were explained a bit more. I just don't get how a book with such gaping holes in it can be given five stars.

From the summary:
...he's suddenly kidnapped by his substitute teacher who is obsessed with H.P. Lovecraft and has a plot to save humanity. A plot to save humanity? What? I don't remember reading about any plot that the substitute teacher had, much less one to save humanity.

In the beginning I was entertained while reading. I thought it was interesting and I thought it was going somewhere, but in the end I was left disappointed.

Honestly, I don't think this book should be considered a thriller, a mystery yes but thriller this is not. I thought the premise was interesting and it started off good but it just got boring really fast. I would consider this more of a convoluted love story than a thriller. Two people who love each other but for reasons never tell each other; expecting rather "feeling" that the other person knows and they find themselves not able to be together. *eye roll* Maybe I simply just didn't connect with the characters enough to care. But, the most interesting part of the story, what really happens to Jon while he's gone for 4 years, is cryptic and never really explained. Throwing in an ailing, ridiculed detective with a floundering marriage into the mix just made it more strange. On top of all that, I absolutely hated the ending.

Just for the record, I have not read You. I intended on getting You but since it wasn't available at the library I ended up with this flop.

This book was challenging to read and not in the fun way. There were three main speakers/narrators which I wish I knew beforehand. It was a turn-off for me trying to follow along with three different storylines that were at one point supposed to come together. Very unsatisfied with the ending, there was no real justice/resolution for the two main narratives(protagonist in particular).
