This book has a case of pathetic protagonist. It was all very underdeveloped in the way early 2000s dystopian YA novels were, and the genderedness of how the men constantly took care of the women (who in turn prepared meals lol) was not doing it for me.

Honestly a pretty crappy book buuuut I wanted to see how it ended. Should have DNF’ed
The zombies had the potential to be great, but they couldn't even break through an average chain-link fence. The love drama is kind of lame with people falling in love in a matter of seconds. So I felt that Ryan had a great basis for a story - zombies take over the world, only a few cities of people survive... Great idea. But the story didn't quite come together. The young adult novel love drama is irritating and dragged out. Mary is CRAZY. She does some super weird stuff like find an infant zombie and hold it... She's really wacky. Blegh, don't read these books, they're retarded. I don't know why I couldn't just say "no thank you!" about half-way through this one. I should have. They are just not well-developed and there are a lot of gaping holes, like the zombies that can kill people in seconds but can't break through a chain link fence. Yeah...

Finally - a true "zombie apocalypse" entry into the canon of young adult literature! My worlds have collided and I couldn't be happier! =)
This book scores major points on all levels -- it's human drama that just happens to be taking place in a world overrun by zombies, or as they're called here, Unconsecrated. Carrie Ryan blends dystopia, romance, and horror with CRAZY SKILL! I hope this breeds a sequel sometime down the road because there is so much more story that could be told.
POSSIBLE SPOILERS:
Mary lives in a fortified village run by an overbearing theocracy called the Sisterhood. The Sisterhood controls everything and has many secrets to keep. Mary, the main character, has lost her mother to the Unconsecrated and finds herself taken in by The Sisterhood to either become one of them, or until she becomes betrothed. She wants a young man named Travis, but another guy, Harry wants her. Lots of tension, romance, and drama going on there. It's pretty overwhelming to Mary. Just as she thinks she's out of choices, she learns of a girl who has come from outside the village, and her presence may completely destroy everything the Sisterhood has done to keep the village under their authority.
Received ARC from library system - will DEFINITELY purchase for teen collection!

Words can not describe how I feel about this book. Maybe it's because it was so different from anything I have ever read and was a fresh breath of air in my world of young adult literature, but this was amazing. Ryan makes you fall in love with every character and feel sincerely, genuinely emotionally attached to each one. You want them to survive this world of hell they have been born into and want them to have a happy ending. It is not so, and that is what makes the journey to the end so heartbreaking but real. That's what I loved too, even though the book's premise is something that is definitely not probable in our own world, it seems like it could be. The reality of the characters' situation never was broken, there was no magical cure that ended everyone's problems and created the perfect resolution, and even though it's sad, it fit the novel, therefore creating a perfect resolution for the situation.
If this is on your to-read list but you are always picking up something else to read I really recommend that you give this one a chance next. It'll have you biting your nails and screaming inside your head until the very last page.
