I found this really difficult to get into. I really wanted to enjoy it as the synopsis sounds so good but I got 69 pages in and I’m just not feeling it. I think the story (up to this point) has travelled a lot faster than I anticipated and I perhaps would have liked a bit more time focussed on the part of their lives prior to page 69... I feel like everything from the synopsis has more or less happened? I am really intrigued still about what will happen to them and whether or not they’ll find who they’re looking for, but those first 69 pages just didn’t intrigue me enough to keep going and find out.
I still love the idea of the story and the cover is absolutely stunning, I love the foiled detail on the title.
Maybe sometime in the future I’ll try again and get a bit further than page 69 but for now I’m slightly disappointed!

I did not realize The Good Luck Girls was a YA book. Had I known that ahead of time, I may not have picked it up. I tend to have a mixed or lukewarm experience with YA novels these days. I think it has something to do with the writing, but it’s not really for me to critique since I am no longer the target audience. The concept for this book is certainly an interesting one. To my experience, there aren’t many dystopian books depicted in a “wild west” pseudo world. For that reason, the story reminded me of the West World reboot. I do think this book could have an aesthetically fun and interesting adaptation for a teen audience. I certainly would have a more enjoyable experience consuming the story in that way. Also, I just realized there is a sequel for this book which makes a ton of sense based on how this book ends.

The concept is interesting and there are some strong moments. But there's also a lot of elements that are too unreal to ignore - characters who are seriously injured and then back up and moving a day later, horses that only kind of get tired, etc. If there's a sequel, I will read it.

The Good Luck Girls
By: Charlotte Nicole Davis

Finished this on audiobook and im thinking 3.5 stars

This was classified as young adult western fantasy. I thought it was a creative idea/issue that was in the book. I think the author did a very good idea of filling us in on the backstory of society at this time and the individuals in the story so I didn’t feel lost, I also though the author managed a sensitive story for some very difficult aspects of the storyline around the Welcome House (bordello) that the five young women are escaping from and the circumstances that brought them there in the first place.

Even though they were fantastical elements it was still believable. I liked the relationships that built between the characters who are on the run and have to make some very difficult decisions as well as find ways to resource their journey.

I didn’t feel that the ending was as satisfying for me…but it wasn’t bad. That could possibly be because there’s a sequel. But it left me hanging a bit.

But overall I thought it was enjoyable as an audiobook. It kept my interest all the way through.

Five girls try to escape their brothel in this magic-infused Western.

This is a great adventure story. I didn't want to put it down once I'd started it, I wanted to find out what would happen next. There was no sense of padding, things progressed nicely and the characters mostly grew with their experiences.Although it finished very nicely, there's definitely room for more titles set in this universe, and I'd be first in line to read them.

This is going to do very well.

They were silent for a few paces. Then Tansy spoke up, hesitantly. "I've never seen a man afraid of me like that before," she said. "It's always been me who's had to be afraid of them."

"Felt good," Mallow said, nodding.

No one else replied, but Aster could sense the others' unspoken agreement. And yet, none of them could quite seem to meet anyone else's eye. Aster didn't feel guilty in the least for what they'd done.

But she wondered if she ought to.

No. That dirty rip had it coming, she told herself fiercely. Let him be at our mercy, for a change.

But he'd almost gotten away. And if he had -

"We'll be more careful next time," Mallow went on, as if she'd heard Aster's thoughts. "There'll be a next time, won't there?"

They hadn't counted the shine yet, but Aster suspected it was enough to justify the risks they'd taken.

"There'll be a next time," she promised.

Some part of her looked forward to it.

I don't know if I can give this book the proper, glowing review it deserves. Nor can I describe it. A mix of action/adventure, coming of age, horror, thriller, YA novel with so many underlying themes.... The characters grow as they are pursued. When I first started reading, I didn't get into it right away. But, Aster, Violet, Clementine, Tansy, Mallow, and then Zee really grew on me. I cant wait until part 2.
