Ahhh! I loved this so much, and I didn’t want it to end. Seriously, I could read about Enid’s life for 10000 more pages. As a weird, mentally ill, potentially neurodivergent lesbian, I felt so much empathy, comfort, and solidarity reading Enid’s story. There were so many heartwarming moments in this book, and I totally vibed with the offbeat humor. My sole complaint is that, based on some little details, I don’t think the age difference between Enid and her sisters really adds up. Anyway, I now NEED to read Emily Austin’s other books, pronto!

Also, this quote knocked me on my ass because of how relatable it was:

I realize I’m gay, but I don’t realize much of who I am beyond that. I feel like I’m still missing some crucial information that I need to fully form myself. I feel half-developed. I’m worried that if I were cut open, I’d see all my organs were half-made. I think I’m missing parts.

It took me a while to really get into this book because it's much more off-putting/tense than my usual slice-of-life romance reads, but by the end, I really loved it. The protagonist was eerily relatable at first--an anxious 26-year-old lesbian who is averse to emotional intimacy, used to make embarrassing YouTube videos as a teenager featuring eccentric makeup, and becomes increasingly paranoid after her apartment is broken into. Fortunately, I lack Enid's interest in true crime and phobia. And my growing paranoia is actually more related to my apartment's rat problem than the break-in, though I suppose I would constitute the rats as unwelcome visitors as well.

Anyway, this novel really triggered my anxiety, but it had a good payoff by the end. So, I'd recommend, but approach with caution if you have a propensity for anxiety.

I had no idea what to expect going into this book but I loved it. I really appreciated the portrayal of PTSD - the small, seemingly insignificant things that linger with you and trigger a reaction after trauma - and the intricacies of the relationships that could either help or delay healing along the way. I loved how the author explores the worry of being a “bad person” and the nuances that go with it. this book was funny, dark, weird, and still managed to tug at the heart strings. 4.5 stars!
