I was so hyped for this book, being a huge fan of the Girls series when I was younger, but sadly it's just not very good. Simplistic and quite predictable storyline, no character growth and lines that make you scratch your head (does JW know you don't "phone" for an Uber??). JW is an excellent children and YA author but just can't handle an adult novel.

This is the most disappointing read of the year. I have to agree with a lot of the other reviews - Ellies thoughts haven’t matured since she was a teenager which is probably why the “dating my old art teacher” plot line felt so gross?? And the cousin plot line… HUH???

None of the characters felt as though they had any depth at all, not even Ellie really? The stream of consciousness style of writing was so repetitive and flip floppy that it bored me to tears. I do not need to know every action that a character does.

I also hated the narrative that Nadine was wrong for wanting to be choked rather than the man who dismissed her withdrawal of consent.

Also the ending felt so rushed?? It was, of course, very obvious that a sapphic revelation would be happening. However, to end it on “we kissed once and lived happily ever after” with only a few pages of vague realisation does NOT HIT

The only positive I can say is this did give me nostalgic vibes - but that’s all

I really hope JW learns from this book, maybe her writing style isn’t fit for adult writing

This is a generous 3 star rating. I loved the girls series so I was excited for this but it let me down.

90% of the plot was about Gary and not about the girls and their friendship which was disappointing.
I spent almost the whole book hoping the relationship with Gary would end. I understand Ellie needed a love interest & maybe the author wanted to keep the original characters but having a relationship with an old teacher was just not believable. I know they are both adults but it still creeped me out.
plus I hated Gary which is a shame because I liked him in the original series.

I also feel like we didn’t get to know much about Nadine & Magda’s lives it was all very surface level. Ellie’s daughter Lottie wasn’t in it as much, talked about yes but other than that no, however
I hated Lottie and her dad story, just seemed pointless

Overall I enjoyed it, but only because of the original girl series. It has some potential for another book which I would be open too because I’m not too sure if I’m happy with how we left things with Ellie and the girls ect.

I am very happy she’s gay now tho, seems a nice fit for her

3.5 for fun. This was very light and easy to read. In terms of actual writing quality... Jacqueline's writing remains (somewhat delightfully) immature. A lot of telling, not showing, a lot of leading unnatural dialogue, rushed plot points. But nonetheless was very fun to read even when it felt silly
