I get so pissed off when I see people say like "wow this was the most twisted book ever!!!!!" and then it turns out to be like barely anything at all. well that is absolutely NOT what happened here. This book had some seriously sick stuff in it, to the point where I was squirming at multiple parts. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but it is decidedly NOT for everyone!! Lots of animal gore and death, extremely graphic descriptions of self mutilation and body horror, just a whole bunch of nasty nasty stuff. VERY old school horror vibes here.
It took me a second to get into this, mostly because I find it boring to read about groups of characters that are entirely male. Like were there any women in this? I just don't care about boys like that :) imagine how much fun it would have been if it was girl scouts this happened to. Anyway.
Once it gets going it is just brutal though. I would honestly not recommend this to people who aren't big horror fans, it's definitely not for the faint of heart. But if you can stomach it, it's a fun read with some great horror elements.

Mixed feelings on this one. It was a really good horror novel, very gripping and also very disgusting. I don’t read this genre so while it was good, it made me feel icky and bad. Probably not a good read when dealing with a lot of anxiety in my really life, but I “enjoyed” it (I mean, as much as you could enjoy a story like this…)
This one took me a while to get into, and when I say a while I mean... I didn’t like this book until the last 50 pages. For so much of it I was thinking “what is this book doing that Lord of the Flies doesn’t do” and I was Bored with a capital B.
But I’m glad I hung in there because the last 50 pages the stakes get higher, the truth comes out, and things get juicy (and upsetting).
So for like 75% of the book it was a 2 star for me but then the end picked it up to 4 star territory. If you like LOTF, I definitely think you’ll like this.

The Scoutmaster - Tim Riggs
The Level-Headed One - Max
The Angry One - Ephraim
The Nerdy One - Newton
The Leader - Kent
The Psycho - Shelley
An annual boy scout weekend trip on an isolated island goes awry when the scoutmaster finds a malnourished and extremely hungry stranger. Very quickly, a disturbing nightmare comes to life and the boys in the troop are faced with life-or-death decisions.
This was my second attempt at reading this book. the first attempt wasn't because I thought it was bad or because I couldn't get it to but because I honestly went in blind and didn't realize the horrifying details that Nick Cutter described (I have slight issue with eyeballs and phalange mutilation). Now, that I was more prepared with details, and I got through it on the second attempt.
The worms... The descriptions of them... squirming under people's skins and the effects they had on their hosts were A++. At first, I wasn't sure what was going on but throughout the audiobook, they had military and medical reports describing the worms and their effect on other test subjects. I quickly figured out that something happened, but I was not expecting this Dr. Edgerton to release a stranger with these things inside him to test them.
I can't imagine the parents when they found out that the island that their children were on was now quarantined. They are being told that it is uninhabited when they know that their kids are out there but with no communication. And then to know later on that your kids were killed basically for a military experiment.

The descriptions were immaculate. The descents into madness were impeccable. I'm SO glad Shelley got what he deserved. The description about the kitten was so heartbreaking. The entire book was just well crafted, and I'm still debating the ending within myself.
MEN.

Pacing was great! If you enjoyed The Hot Zone (depictions of contagions and their effects), you’ll like this.
Despite how absolutely fucking awefully SICKENING this book was... This was... Incredible... The writing is so enchanting, especially regarding the comparisons of body horror toward every day objects. It painted the picture perfectly for me.
Every character played a role in how this narrative was told, from major to minor. There were the characters you were meant to loathe, and characters you were meant to treasure (and boy did I treasure two specific boys). The subtle foreshadowing of each character's fate was incredibly subtle, I'm surprised I even noticed, but the events that unfolded didn't come out of no where, you just had to know where to look. It feels really rare for me to find a book that actually has direction and an inevitable ending. It all felt so refreshing, especially since I was scared shitless lol. AnywAY, I will forever be thinking about this book. This book left me with such complex feelings, I can't tell if it's from pure DISGUST or heartbreak.
