The Spy is the last book in the Kingmakers series. When I read Sophie Lark's Brutal Birthright series I fell in love with her mafia families. So when I found out that she was doing a series based on the children of many of the characters from the first series, I was so excited! I wouldn't have believed that I would love this series even more.
The Spy is a mystery. You meet the spy in the previous book, The Bully. You get a chapter here and there with little clues to his identity and his reason for being at Kingmakers, the prestigious college for mafia families all over the world. What you don't know at first, is who is pretends to be at Kingmakers. And I won't spoil it here. But he's assuming the identity of someone else in order to save the life of someone he loves.
Our heroine is Nix. She is the daughter of a ruthless Ukranian mafia boss. She is immediately hated by almost everyone at the school. What she learns is that her father is not who she thinks he is. He has in fact been hiding a lot of what he does and who he is. However, Nix is the best heroine. A little innocence, a lot of sass, plenty of determination, definitely intelligent and passionate. She thrives outdoors and spends a lot of time exploring the island.
Our mysterious Spy hates Nix at first site but he's also intrigued by her. He sees her strength and straightfowardness and although he has long denied himself any relationships while on his mission at Kingmakers, he can't deny the strength of his attraction to her.
I loved watched our Spy try to fight his feelings for Nix. He becomes torn between family and feelings. He tried to keep his focus on why he was there but he fell hard for Nix and she, in turn, fell for him.
When we get to the climax of the story, there's a lot going on. I love that it involves so many of the characters we loved from previous books. It is an anxiety filled few chapters and you worry for all of our characters but you know that there will be HEAs at the end.
A few things that I wish for this book. I think that it could definitely been two books. In her previous books in this series we get a few chapters from the POV of one of the main pair in the next book. Since this is the last book, we don't get that but instead get chapters that go from past to present with another character from another series. While it was a great story, one that I will definitely go back and read, I think it really detracted from our Kingmaker characters.
There was A LOT that happened in this book. One of the things I did enjoy was the epilogues, which features each of our previous books couples. I could have literally gone for a whole book of epilogues. Little novellas for each character to wrap up their stories. These epilogues were way too short for me. I fell in love with them all and wanted to keep learning more and more about them.
Another thing I loved about the book is Sabrina Gallo! She is one bad MF! You meet her in The Rebel and we see her fully formed and finally at Kingmakers. I think she should have totally had her own book! Come on Sophie! She is such a badass and deserved more!!!!
I loved this series so much and it was a great conclusion to this series. Well done Sophie!

This was a RIDE. I didn't connect with Nix as much as I thought I might but the spy? Helloooooo. Their intimacy was HOT. Their friendship and closeness were so exciting. The twists and turns in this one had me setting up expectations and then tearing them down to revise them, over and over. I loved the pacing and the character development. I also loved how you got to know both who the spy was during their time in hiding as well as who they are in reality. Those characters were very much night and day, which added the right amount of spice.
slow-paced
This freaking book/series!
This book is a secret, and I won’t say any character names, but I absolutely loved how this all came together. I loved the heroine. I also loved how everyone/everything came together for the cause. It was so freaking cool to see how the kids from the brutal birthright series turned out to be. All of them are fierce and beautiful.

This series has taken me by surprise in the best way possible. It is literally a banger after a banger - I can't tell you which book I like best and I get the strong urge to re-read the whole thing now that I already know some things. And yes, I have not even finished the series.
This has brought me a predicament concerning the rating of the books. There is no book that has stood out (there all good in their own way), so I feel like I can't rate any book more than the other, but then I also feel like 4 stars is not enough. (I take this book rating business very serious.)
In this book, "the spy" is finally closer to this revenge than ever. He has waited year in the shadows, masking behind a different identity. His target: the unsuspecting daughter of the man who ruined his life. Nix is oblivious to this connection and finds herself drawn to "the spy". The lines between deception and desire blur and soon "the spy" has to face a hard decision: love or vengeance?
I am intentionally not using the fake nor the real name of "the spy" because we're would be the fun in that. Go read the series, take your guess and don't be tempted by the spoiler. I had a strong feeling about who "the spy" is, but I also thought it was too obvious.... but I was indeed right. I feel like "Ares" was very random and the comments towards him made by the author were quite mysterious sometimes so I guess it makes sense. Still obvious. My second guess would have been Hedeon but he has different problems.
At first I was quite annoyed by the flashbacks of Nix and Rafe's (aka Ares) parents which always happen when the present is much more interesting. But they make actually a lot of sense once you (or stupid me) learn who is who. Mafia relations and family trees are my nemesis.
Hell yes, did I enjoy the plot and absolute chaos at the end. Couldn't put the book away. I feel like the author wanted to end the series here because their are little epilogue for all of the four couples which have made me very happy, as I am officially very attached to the characters. Glad I get to read one more book.
(11.01.2025) I have officially finished the whole series and since book three, I am in awe of the constant bangers theis series entails. I feel like 4,0 stars isn't enough but I also can't really choose between any of the first four books (send help). So I am changing the rating to 4,5 to match my hype.
