Upon beginning this story, I think I was expecting layers of something other than what [a:Jack Whitney|21081609|Jack Whitney|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1616012380p2/21081609.jpg] delivered. I personally wanted the focus to be moreso on the action and world building rather than continually steering towards the smut. This story was a touch "insta" for my personal preferences. Overall though, this story is important to the Author and I completely respect her creativity and writing a story that she felt compelled to express herself through.

Jack NEVER disappoints and this has been her best work yet! I was drawn to the dark side of this fabulous world where you can find beauty in the darkest of places. Sam and Ana are definitely my new book crushes! It's steamy and twisted in the most amazing ways. You will not want to put this book down!

⚠️warning ⚠️
Death, blood, manipulation, violence, murder, suicide, suicide stories, moments of horror, ghosts, demons, as well as brief mentions of child death, self-harm, sexual assault, and abuse.

This is the first book in a new the Nightmares Duology and shit this book was AMAZING! Not only was it dark and spicy but it was full of emotions that will make you swoon, laugh and cry. Ana is a badass mortal FMC who used her skills to overthrow ruthless Kings. Her last mission is to overthrow the King of Shadowmyer Sam who she doesn’t realize is Death itself. Sam and Ana embark on a journey and secrets are revealed that will test their relationship. The world building is unique and the side characters make this plot evermore enjoyable. This book does ends in a cliffhanger. Highly recommended if you love enemies to lovers and paranormal romance!

Death/ Sam was phenomenal! Dirty talker, sweetly dominant, and artistry sensitive. He’s well thought out and care for his realm after being used by others that want to kill his demons.

The Tower/ Ana was not phenomenal. I found her lacking resolve and trajectory. Maybe it was the unclear motive of her actions or her murky backstory. I just could not connect or get behind her.

Side characters were great. Millie is a force.

I wish there was a map or more information about the many kingdoms. I had a hard time understanding their interactions and proximity to each other. Also the history behind them all would be helpful. Perhaps that will be more in book two.

Full on spicy spice right away. Keeps up for 60% the book then tapers off.

I’ll read book two just for Death.

I enjoyed this so much! Jack Whitney’s writing is so beautiful!

This is a part one the Nightmares Duology and is a dark fantasy romance. This did start out pretty slow for me and it took longer than I’m used to for me to get into the story. Which I think tends to happen with fantasy novels since there is a lot of world building.

Samarius Cain, Death, Sam. The ultimate book boyfriend. I loved his character! Dark, broody, sexy, and witty. And then we have Ana who is really Deianira Bronfell was such a great FMC. I loved the fact that even though she was a moral human she was still BA, could still conquer kings and their kingdoms and didn’t let anything get in her way. And it wasn’t shoved down my throat that she “was only human” that happens in so many fantasy books.

Their push and pull relationship was so good and the spice was excellent! I can’t wait for the next book and to see what destruction they will wreak together!
