EMOTIONAL DAMAGE EMOTIONAL DAMAGE EMOTIONAL DAMAGE. In all seriousness though, this is one of my favorite books of all time and it has left such a mark on me. I still think about it regularly, which is big for me considering I read it in fourth grade. I remember loving the writing style so much and really connecting with the characters, and I'm thinking that next time I pick it up I'll find the story to be just as heartbreaking, heartwarming, and overall enjoyable as before.

Just great. Simply but effectively draws us into the world of a young man in frontier days. As I've been thinking more about my cattle-farmer grandparents on both sides of my family, this helped me connect with that life, with a lot of great details about living on the land. Mentions of Native Americans were cringe-y, if I remember right. (I read this a bit at a time over a few months.) Spoiler here, I guess, but I was really surprised by how he handled the dramatic event at the end. Just one sentence. Really impressive, actually. Anyway, glad I read this.
I love this book so much! It breaks my heart every time, but never will that make me not love it.
Amazing! There is a reason this book is such a classic. I cried at the end. What a dog that Yeller. A frontier family survive with the help of this scoundrel dog. This book is so grounded and down to earth. They had a lot of ingenuity living on the land as they did. I appreciated how Fred handled the emotions of the characters. Everything and everyone felt so real. I felt like they were living and breathing. Travis's emotional arch is touching. This is a work of art, it really is. I'm so glad I gave this a go. You should too.
Newbery Challenge 129/412. So much better than I expected. I remember the movie being boring and sad, but I watched it when I was a kid. The book is just wonderful. Full of adventure with a rich narrative voice. I teared up at the end, but it was a good cry. I finished Sounder today too. That was sad without a point. Old Yeller is sad but there’s a reason it’s sad. It somehow makes the story richer. The audio is well done. Highly recommend.
This was my favorite movie growing up but I had never read the book until now! I enjoyed referencing back to the movie and comparing how different scenarios were played out. What I took away from the book was the importance of family unity, respect for each other, and the comfort/joy that Old Yeller brought!
“I knew then that I loved him as much as I did Mamma and Papa, maybe in some ways even a little bit more. (Travis talking about brother Arliss.) So it was only natural for me to come to love the dog that saved him.”
