This book is proof that truth is stranger than fiction. I really enjoyed learning about this heretofore overlooked history of the Civil War. It was a great read.
It’s amazing what important roles these women played, and yet, I had never heard of any of them before.

I liked that this book hit on two important topics: the Civil War and women's history. I am hoping to read some more books that focus on women for the rest of the year. I am certain I must have several that I haven't yet read. I thought this book was exceptionally well researched, and I enjoyed this author very much. The book was really informative and gave a great perspective on the role of women in the Civil War.
A slow starting book but once I got into it, it's fast paced exciting stories of espionage kept me glued! Some women to admire and some to not, depending on who you hoped to win the Civil War. A great read for any lover if history although perhaps not perfectly written with the historian in mind. ;)
Even though it was challenging to keep all the four main women’s stories straight, it was an entertaining listen. An improvement to the audio would have been four different voices. Glad I stuck with it to hear about Emma’s life following the war in the epilogue.
This book is an amazing look at the Civil War form a different perspective. It is interesting how most stories of war are told from a masculine perspective but war happened to women too and there were many ways that women impacted the various war efforts. The four women in this story showed different levels and perspectives on courage and they sacrificed many things and put their lives and their families lives at risk, all while supporting a cause that was important to them.
You cannot help but become engaged and enthralled in these women's pursuits and lives and, no matter which side of the war they were on, you can't help but be inspired by their spirits. Highly recommend!

What a cool book—such an interesting perspective on the Civil War, women in the 19th century, and the good ol’ US of A. I admire the spirit, pluck, courage, and commitment that all of these women exuded, and I find myself inspired by each woman’s refusal to live any way other than the way that was most authentic to them. (Obviously, though, I’m uninterested in and opposed to encouraging or supporting the beliefs behind the actions of the two Confederate women.) Going forward, give me all the nonfiction about all the sassy, strong, unyielding women who have come before me. I will read it all.
A fascinating look at the American Civil War from a four pointedly female perspectives. I appreciate what Abbott set out to do; the research required for a work of this magnitude must have been overwhelming. In paring down that research, however, she failed to write cohesive and neutral documentation of history. Not only is her story-telling and fact-stating scattered and often careless, her slyly insinuated agenda is antiquated and offensive to readers who are emotionally capable of legitimately sympathizing with ALL who were affected by the grim tragedy of the Civil War (and not just those who were called victors). On a final note - whoever edited the final manuscript was highly overpaid. Grammatical and spelling errors have no place in a work of such gravity. Final, final note - the title. Original, much?
