This book had such a great start, with an interesting set-up, but unfortunately it became a little anticlimactic for me. A lot of things happened in this book but it started to feel like being dragged on side quests rather than focusing on the main problem/plot of the book.

This was a really fun greek mythology read that had a little Hunger Games twist to it! For some reason I had a hard time getting into it at the beginning, but I quickly got absorbed with the characters and the action. Definitely recommend!

I enjoyed this book. I thought the premise was really interesting, and I liked the juxtaposition of ancient Greek mythology set against a modern NYC setting. Though the whole trope of the hunt being a secret world from outsiders felt a bit tired.

I liked the characters, especially Miles, though I felt his internship was used as a 'get out of jail' card a bit too much towards the end. However, I liked all the main characters and how they interacted and the little moments of humour were nice.

Spoilers here:
I have to admit that as much as I liked this book, I felt that the ending was a bit of a let down. It wasn't very clear what happened with the end of the hunt and if Lore's theory was correct or not. Also, I expected a short epilogue or similar to tie up some of the lose ends such as what happened to the main characters and the rest of the hunters, but there wasn't and so it felt quite vague.

I would've liked to know if Lore and Castor were immortal and still able to use their powers, and the 'why' of if they were or weren't. I felt that everything else had been explained quite clearly such as the rules, and reasons, yet at the end there's this ambiguity that felt at odds with the rest of the book.
End of Spoilers.

Overall this still gets 4 stars from me because I kept wanting to read it to find out what happens, and I'd happily recommend this book.

I received this ARC from Disney publishing and likely Ms. Bracken herself, along with a cool set of temporary tattoos that I have yet to use but stare at longingly, so thank you both for this glorious book.

'Lore' the book is about a tournament like system that takes place every seven years, in which the Greek Gods are hunted down for their immortality and powers, and of course their titles. It is a vicious game/way of life that has split into many bloodlines (Also, cool fact that the book has a list of everyone who is in what bloodline and what god is who so that's amazing).

Lore, the person, is the last of the Perseus bloodline and has been trying to escape the life for the last seven years just to be pulled back into it by her past and the remaining gods.

This, in my opinion, is one of the best books that Bracken has written since her 'Darkest Minds' series, and I've read her books religiously. She's one of my favorite authors and I think that this one is so unique that no one else would have been able to do it the way that she has.

The best parts of this story were that everyone was ready to square up on eye contact; there was no hesitation, there was only stab first and ask questions later. The main plot can be that of a young woman coming into herself and her inheritance, and very minorly a romance but the fighting was a great part of this; easy to follow along with, great characters, beautiful storytelling, and plot twists that had me freaking out at two a.m.

Lore is living rent-free in my head, I'm going to be thinking about her every time I see Medusa and every time someone talks about the Greeks now. She's perfect.

2.5 stars

I don’t know how people would not have noticed how every 7 years a city decimated.

I don’t like how some important info is only in the synopsis. Like I don’t read synopses so i was confused a lot because I didn’t understand why they started hunting gods. I still don’t know why at the end of this.

It held my interest enough but it confuses me.

Lore amazed me, and every new chapter it amazed me a little more. People have mixed feelings about this book. However I do really love it. The only thing keeping me from rating it with 5 stars is Part Four. Part Four did not touch me, the other four parts were great. Also the ending is a little vague but also not.

If you are thinking about starting this book, just do! The first few chapters can be a little boring and difficult to understand but believe it will be totally worth it!

Didn’t really click with me. Like adult Percy Jackson, but just one long fight scene and not enough character development.

⭐️⭐️ (1.5 rounded up to 2 stars. Keep in mind I usually 99.999% of the time only give 1 star to a book I DNF)

BEWARE MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD
THIS IS GONNA BE A DOOZY

Oooook. This book. Was terrible. I am so disappointed in it. I was pumped what with the mythology and the whole “Hunger games” concept supposedly.. and I was let down tremendously.

Ok I’m going to put this in points and then expand on them. Bear with me because I’m super annoyed.

1. There was absolutely no point to anything in this story, and the entire thing was confusing af.
I was, at one point, 80% through the book and still didnt understand what was going on. I’m going to try to explain what the plot was, but hang with me because frankly I still dont fucking get it. I waited and waited and waited for some kind of explanation and spent the entire book waiting. Supposedly, a long time ago, 9 of the Greek gods decided they were .. I dont know.. bored? They needed to be revered more? So they started screwing with peoples lives just so that the people would turn to them for help. Shit like making up illnesses and stuff.. all to turn the world towards the gods for help and start praying to them again or something. Who knows. Zeus got pissed off and decided that he was going to punish them by making the gods mortal for 7 days every 7 years to compete in something called the Agon. To do what? I dont fucking know. Seriously. I dont know. Its not ever really explained. Neither are the “houses” of each god, of which our main character, Lore, is a part of.

From what I can gather.. each of the 9 gods was given a House of mortals to look after and protect them (no, thats not a typo. The mortals are supposed to protect the gods.

Loved this book. Had a slow start but I think it’s needed to understand how angry Lore is and to see her character development flourish. There is a tiny romance subplot but it doesn’t overwhelm the main plot of the book. The plot’s twists and betrayal at the end is so heart wrenching! But they all made sense, it wasn’t a twist just to have one, it made sense to the story. With it being a standalone the questions you have throughout the book do get answered and you get a solid conclusion to the story and a happy ending.
