Another dark, dark story in this series. This time with an undercover mission to find a missing woman connected to their little group of freedom fighters.

The tension was thick and the stakes were high.

Our FMC was another tough woman, never giving up in the face of the worst treatment/torture. And our MMC was smitten from first sight.

The feelings in this one developed maybe a bit too quickly for me, but I live for this HEAs.

What this book is giving:
โœ… Dark Romance
โœ… Dual POV/narration
โœ… Captive
โœ… Undercover
โœ… Secret Identity
โœ… Little fighter

Dark and gritty, Pam Godwin gives us book 7 in her Deliver series. Unshackle has all the elements I love in dark romance. Luke, the alpha male is going undercover to find Tula's sister, Vera. Little does he know exactly what he is going to find! Broken himself, it's not an easy task, and upon meeting Gina, he has met his match. Gina is an incredible heroine. With what she has gone through, she proves that hope is never lost. The twists and turns kept me on the edge, and the undeniable chemistry between Luke and Gina is hot! Godwin has gave me hours of excitement and suspense, passion and surprises. You will be wondering just how Luke will get Vera out and keep them both alive! I loved it and hope to see what else Godwin has in store for us in her next book.

Narration for dark romance is key. You need believable narrators and the casting of J Tipstone and Lacy Laurel is perfect. It's my first listen by Tipstone, and his voice is meant to read dark romance. He has a grittiness and tone that fits Luke. Laurel proves her talent coming in with attitude as Gina and showing just how strong, yet slightly vulnerable she is. This team knocked it out of the park and gave me a fantastic listen.

I have been anxiously and patiently waiting to read Luke's story and it was so much better than I had expected.
Luke and Tomas are undercover to find and rescue Tula's sister Vera and find themselves caught up in the La Rocha cartel. This despicable group of vermin do unspeakable things to women. Luke and Tomas become entangled in the lies and deceit at their compund.
This series is spectacular and all encompassing. Unshackle captured me immediately and I could not put this book down!

verb

1. Release from shackles, chains, or other physical restraints.

"his feet were unshackled"

2. Liberate; set free.

Pam Godwin has a preternatural ability to create the vilest of beings, hone their skills, sacrifice others for their gain, and then find some motherfing way to make you sympathize and fall head over heels in love with them as a person...the bad guy. It should NOT be possible.  And yet...this series is a twisted and seriously dark place I never want to leave.

Unshackle is just the next story in the lives of the Freedom Fighters. Tracking down Tula's sister and saving her- if only it were that easy.

Luke is on a mission and it is another life changing moment for this fighter. His wishes, his life goals, his future depend on the outcome of this mission. One wild and untamed girl is a distraction he cannot risk and yet he cannot avoid. It is a twisted hope in their universe and one I clung to like a spider monkey. All with a smile on my heart and stone cold reserve on my face. (Though now, I'm sporting the doopiest of grins!)

This series is going to be hard to let go of...Good thing we still have more to come.

Luke is known as the charmer, the one who always seems to have a woman in his bed, if only for a few hours. He never expected that to change. His past is a dark dark place that hides all manner of sick s..t and it's definitely not something he could imagine sharing with someone. His mission is to rescue Vera Gomez at all costs and discover the location of the La Rocha Cartels compound. It's not to be captived by the Cartelโ€™s vicious captive. It's most definitely not on the agenda to fall for her. Her past is a mystery he wants to uncover. Her pains is one he wants to comfort. And her pleasure is one he wants to give, at all costs. Vera Gomez may have been his mission, but this woman is the key to his salvation. Their story is not a romantic one, it's not traditional and it's definitely not for everyone. But it's theirs and I found it beautiful and intense and I could not put it down.

I enjoyed this, but I just couldn't connect with Vera and Luke as much as I did with the others in the series. I felt like there was not enough build up. Everything transpired too fast. Not my favorite but I still liked it.

Unshackle is the seventh installment in Pam Godwinโ€™s Deliver series and cannot be read as a standalone. Itโ€™s very important to read this series in order. If you prefer to avoid spoilers, you should avoid even reading the names of the protagonists in the book blurbs. Because of that, I wonโ€™t be mentioning any character names in my review. They will just be referred to as the FMC or MMC.

The MMC in this story was quite likable to me. I met him earlier in the series but really enjoyed getting to know his character through Unshackle. The mission he went on seems completely in line with his nature, and it made the story very believable.

The FMC in this story is someone I just wanted to root for. Sheโ€™s such a strong woman with the tenacity and grit I love to see in female characters. I admired her strength and her eventual vulnerability woven through the book.

The MMC and FMC connected and bonded rather quickly, and while a speedy connection is not normally my favorite type of trope, it definitely worked and felt believable in this case because of how it was written. The characters are tested in many instances and go through a lot in such a short amount of time, that it made sense how they might form that bond in that timespan.

I have to commend Pam Godwin on her creativity in these books. At the 76% mark, there was a scene that I had never encountered in any dark romance books. I consider myself a dark romance โ€œconnoisseur,โ€ and this was a new type of scene for me. It was incredibly well done and delivered on what I would guess the intention was โ€“ creeping me out.

The depths and details that this series goes into are so refreshing. When I open up a dark romance book, I expect it to go โ€œhard,โ€ so to speak. I want the details that might make some squeamish. Pam Godwin achieves high marks from me in this regard. This series is one of the best in its genre โ€“ dark romance with captive/captor themes. Youโ€™d think that after 6 books, the seventh book might show a similar plot or character behavior from previous books, but no. Each book in this series is completely original and necessary while exploring stories within the same fictional world. Itโ€™s astounding, and this series will be one I will always recommend to those that are true fans of dark romance.
