Peter and Max is a twisted fairy tale about the bitter rivalry between Peter Piper (of pickled pepper fame) and his older brother Max (who later becomes the Pied Piper of Hamelin). Although the story stands alone very well, it's set in the universe of the comic series Fables, also written by Bill Willingham. Good stuff, all of it.

The Fables series seems more powerful in graphic novel form, but it was nice to revisit some old friends (and learn some wonderfully creepy back story).

for those who like a little bloody backstory to their nursery rhymes.

I enjoyed this. It worked well as an illustrated prose story and was a nice addition to the Fables world. The ideas of Peter Piper and the Pied Piper story were thought out well, and tied together well with the larger Fables story - although the pickled pepper was rather awkwardly shoe horned in. Overall, quite good, I wouldn't be averse to seeing more Fables prose stories. The art fitted well within the story and I'm glad it was in there as it's more fitting in a book that comes from a comic series, it would've felt odd without it I think.

There's a couple of references to the main story too - e.g. the cubs, and
Spoilerwhat Clara was up to in the war against the Adversary, which I'd always wondered about so it was nice to see it in here
. I hope that Peter and Bo appear again in the main Fables story at some point, that'd be fun.

Now it's back to Jack of Fables for me (mores the pity), and the the Fables Crossover.

I need to preface this review by mentioning that I read the Fables series and a fan of Bill Willingham. The fraternal dynamic that he set up in Peter & Max worked really well. He crafted a fine balance of jumping between present day and the past in the Homelands. The only negative aspect of this novel lay within the first 50-60 pages where the Willingham was getting a feel for this non comics medium and some of the exposition felt forced. The author's techniques pulled into high gear and provided with a very satisfying finish. I hope Willingham will provide additional prose in the future.

This book solidified Bill Willingham as one of my literary heroes of all time, and I earnestly hope he writes more Fables Novels. I have been LOVING the Fables Comic series so it was really great to re-enter that world through my familiar and favorite medium, the novel. All my favorite things about the Fables world were there, along with all the things I love about reading a novel: getting lost in the world and the language and delving a lot deeper into the world and the character's motivations than you usually can in a graphic form.
I have always loved fairytale re-tellings, but I am continuously amazed by Willingham's ability to create such beautiful and intricate stories from all the fairytales and fables we all know and love so well. This was one of the best books I have read in a long time.

This was the first book I read on my new Nook. It was a very enjoyable experience. As to the book itself, it started off slow and a little boring but the story quickly picked up after the first few chapters. It really helps to be familiar with the Fable graphic novels. The author gives a good introduction to the universe, but you'll enjoy it more having read the comics. I still think Willingham is better suited to comic book writing, but this was a good read overall.
