I feel nauseous just remembering this book. Why did I ever read this?

First of all, I love Washington Irving, so I was very excited to delve into this book. Unfortunately, the book lacks a lot of history that it could and should have. In fact, this book is actually a 500-ish page book about a teen girl who has no idea how to grieve, has some pretty selfish parents, and likes to go on and on about how to make perfume, and then another 6-ish page book that's absolutely amazing and exciting.

I wish it had been the other way around. And I'm almost too annoyed with it to not buy the second book, but now that the author has given us the conclusion that we all came to within the first 50 pages, maybe she won't keep hiding it behind descriptions of the snow and intense necklaces.

Also, did anyone else notice that there is literally an "ABC" of love triangle thing going on here?

A -- Abbey
B -- Ben
C -- Caspian

Abby has just lost her best friend, Kristen. It has been sixty-eight days since Kristen went missing. Rumors are swirling that Kristen killed herself. Abby doesn’t believe that. In fact, she still believes that Kristin is alive somewhere. Her parents are holding a funeral. Have you ever attended a funeral with no body? It is so weird.

Abby escapes down into the basement of Kristin’s house. When Kristin and Abby were little, they used to play down in the basement. They would pretend that there was a magical castle in the basement. To Abby’s surprise, she is not alone. A boy by the name of Caspian is also hiding in the basement. There is something different about Caspian. What could he possibly be hiding? Also, can Abby handle the truth about Kristen’s secret life?

Jessica Verday gives the tale of Sleepy Hollow, her own unique twist. I thought The Hollow was a good young adult novel. I did get into this book and the characters. I knew there was something different about Caspian but I didn’t quite expect the outcome that was presented in this story. At about four hundred and some odd pages, this book is actually a very quick read. I have to admit that I did not like how this book ended, though I understand why as it is helping to lead up to the next book that continues this story. I look forward to continuing the journey with Abby and Caspian.

Abbie is probably my favorite character of all time. I love her thoughts, her perfume making and her love for the mysterious. I love her snickerdoodle recipe, and I had to go buy her perfumes on the author's website......which was so long ago I can't even remember. I can reread this series and always find some new magical aspect I didn't think about the first time!

I loved the connection with 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and I thought that the books was an interesting read but I did fing myself getting a little bored at times and the characters annoyed me slightly at certain parts. I did, however, love the ending. I think the last couple of chapters totally made the book worth reading and I will be picking up the sequel.

And I'm done.

Drivel.

I was mildly interested.
There was a mystery of how her friend died and the second diary, cool - following along.
Guy who keeps being off/on - fine. (BTW authors, a wishy-washy guy isn't mysterious. It's annoying. Mysterious isn't a disappearing act.)
Major plot threads/red herrings where it started to get interesting but the plot didn't follow - ok sure, there's a couple other books. Maybe they'll be addressed there.
Weird random characters that are set in their personalities but change based on whatever the author needs them to be - ok, starting to lose me here...

Reading ahead to hear that the main character kills herself over a guy? Uh, not even Twilight does that. :/ (really losing me here. Staying in it to finish since I'm 80%...)

but...

You lost me over the supposedly second leg of the psudo love triangle the author was setting up - Ben Bennett? Really? Benjamin Bennett. As a creator of worlds, the god of all ye shall write and you can't come up with a better bloody name?

Bye.

I really, really wanted to love this book... but I just didn't. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but this isn't necessarily a book that I would gush about to a friend or fellow bibliophile.

Abbey seems realistic enough and I liked Ben and even Caspian, when he wasn't being wishy-washy, but the story seemed to have gotten bogged down in the minutiae. Details are wonderful when they move a story along, though not so much when it seems to stall a story in the middle of the novel.

I had a feeling that Katy and Nikolas were not who they seemed to be and I had a feeling Caspian wasn't as well, but I expected him to be the ghost of a young Mr. Irving and not who/what he ended up being. I also didn't expect that the resolution of Kristen's death would be dropped in the end since it seemed such an integral part of the story.

I just felt as if there was all this build up with Kristen's diaries, Caspian and the issues surrounding their relationship, Katy and Nikolas appearing out of nowhere, and the budding friendship with Ben that sort of fell flat in the end.

And though this isn't a stellar review, I will likely read book two just to figure out book one.

DO NOT BELIEVE THE BLURB.

This is how not to write plots unless you want gaping holes.
