The ending more than made up for annoying Davy and Phillipa.
This was a reread, and I loved it even more than I remembered. This is the Anne book that matches most closely with my life right now and that added a whole extra layer of enjoyment for me. The studying, the growing up and finding your own feet were all just so applicable to my life right now. I actually wish there was a little more of the actual studying (her second year was barely mentioned) as it was nice to see how that looked a hundred years ago and all the ways it is the same and different. Her writing dreams also hit close to home (& I am sad that they were mostly abandoned in the later Anne stories). Generally, it was pretty wonderful experiencing a book written over a century ago striking so many chords with me.
All in all, I loved this first reread & it is very much a comfort book for me.
(I also had not appreciated on my first read-through how Montgomery weaves little Christian references in in a fairly consistent manner throughout. For example:
-‘I don’t believe Old Nick can be so very ugly,’ said Aunt Jamesina reflectively. ‘He wouldn’t do so much harm if he was. I always think of him as a rather handsome gentleman.’
-A sentence from a very old, very true, very wonderful Book came to her lips.)

ANNE AND GILBERT. omg the ending. FINALLY AFTER 3 BOOKS.
this book was so so cute, as always i love lm montgomery’s writing style. i loved reading about this era of anne’s life. the last book was still good but im sorry i find the whole davy and dora storyline so boring, i do not care about that little bitch of a child, i know he’s young and becomes better he’s just soo annoying and it bothered me how patient anne was with him. i loved the storyline of miss lavendar reuniting with steven irving last book, but this book, omg. first of all i love their little group at miss patty’s place (the place they’re renting). ALL OF THEM ARE SUCH GOOD FRIENDS and are all so sweet to each other, there’s zero jealousy or animosity between them and ugh i love them all. i especially love phillipa though, she’s so extravagant and calls it like she sees it which can sometimes make her come across as arrogant but i think she isn’t at all, she’s just a little bit frivolous like she says, but i love her and anne’s friendship, how they always support each other but are always honest with each other. im so happy that she got married to that minister guy; after soo many years of being indecisive over which guy she wanted she finally met someone who she was sure with, and even though he wasn’t rich or handsome she loved him more than all of them. i am so happy. diana made less appearances in this book, especially after getting married but her and anne’s friendship will always be the most special, they are just so perfect. ruby gillis talking to anne right before she died was so beautiful, cause before that i didnt reallt like ruby that much. that night when she stopped denying that she was dying and just talked through it with anne was so so sad but the scenery was so pretty idk. also that little side plot with Janet, and that guy who finally proposed to her AFTER 20 YEARS because of a promise he made to his mother to never marry while she was alive was so cute. FINALLY GILBERT AND ANNE. HOLY SHIT THIS IS THE LONGEST LONGEST SLOW BURN I HAVE EVER READ. EVEN THOUGH LOVE ROSIE TOOK UNTIL THEY WERE FIFTY IT ALL TOOK PLACE IN ONE BOOK, ANNE AND GILBERT TOOK 3 BOOKS AND ALMOST 10 YEARS TO FINALLY GET TOGETHER. gilberts first proposal reminded me so so much of laurie’s proposal to jo in little women- the way anne knew exactly what he was gonna do, wanting to stay friends, and gilbert saying he couldnt just be friends and that he always loved her made me UGHHHHHHHHHHH. bro but when anne refused roy’s proposal that was lowk so mean, she led him on for 2 years

Probably the least episodic of the first three Anne books, as we see Anne during her college years. There are plenty of amusing stories, but it’s more concerned with Anne making new friends, conquering her college studies, and finally finally realizing her feelings for Gilbert Blythe. This angle is probably why this volume stands out for me, along with the first, among all the volumes in the series.
5 STARS
Fall and winter are the perfect time to return to Anne Shirley's world, and I'm glad I could sneak one more in the series into the year. Covering her years at college and her first foray into publishing, I think this book (and the portions of the 1985 series based on it) is responsible for my early dreams of becoming a writer. For that, it will always hold a special place in my heart. If you've never read past the first ANNE OF GREEN GABLES book, I'd highly suggest making 2023 the year you change that.
