I loved this book. I needed a nice palette cleanser from all the fantasy I’ve been reading and this did the trick! It has all of the elements of my favorite things. New Orleans, serial killer, true crime, and medical examiner. Those are weird things to like but to each their own. The twist really got me! I loved it! I should’ve seen it coming but I was so engrossed in the story I didn’t have time to let my brain fully wrap around all the tiny details.
Was it the best written book? No
Did I have a good time? Yes and that’s what gets it a high rating. It was the perfect length and doesn’t draw anything out longer than necessary. I’m looking forward to the next one. Put me on your arc list! I’ll actually enjoy it unlike some of these reviewers 😜

This is really not a genre I enjoy much so my rating is probably a bit skewed. I wanted to read it because Morbid :)

Can't wait for the second book!

I recently started listening to Morbid, and then a coworker lent me a copy of The Butcher and the Wren, saying that it was written by one of the co-hosts. I stayed up until 2am to finish it, and read it all in one sitting. It was not predictable at all, and I even had to reread a few parts to make sure I understood everything correctly.
The ending was a bit hurried and unsatisfying, but I really just can’t wait to read the sequel.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would love to read more of Dr. Wren Mullen in future books.

i love the 'Morbid' podcast and there was a ton of hype around Alaina's book, so i thought i would give it a read. i finished it in one day, so i enjoyed the pacing and was definitely compelled by and curious about mystery and if/how they would catch the Butcher. i liked how it was informed by Alaina's background as an autopsy tech and vast knowledge of many different true crime cases, as well.

and. if this book were written for television or film (which i believe is in the works) it would not pass the 'Bechdel Test.' unless the birthday party scene drawn out i suppose, but still. all of the main characters were white (i think) men except for Wren, and the women in this book were all victims/survivors. it was just frustrating and disappointing.

there were also weird inconsistencies in how some of the characters were described and at times there were gaps in how we got from one moment to another, so just some inattention to detail and some minor plot holes. but overall, a pretty okay read - just expected more diversity and a feminist lens.

2 and 1/2 stars really, but rounding up because *I like her podcast*

The writing is pretty basic. It’s a paint by numbers crime story with a bit of jarring and unconvincing narrative. People don’t tend to talk this way and it brought me out of the story a bit.

The killer is a pretty typically baroque narcissist, our main character is an obvious self insert and there’s a lot of random side characters and bits of the story that don’t really need to be there or make any sense, they’re just page filler, and our characters husband doesn’t really seem to have a purpose except to just be around from time to time.

I’m not sure that the police would ever let someone so involved in a crime/ crime scene/ past event become part of the active investigation even if they are the ME, so it rings as unbelievable at times, too.

It’s not a bad book. It’s definitely not the best book. There’s absolutely worse and I wanted to get to the end so I could see what happened, so if you like Morbid definitely give it a read.
