I did enjoy this story, but it was so unbelievable. The Bigfoot encounter WAS NOT the unbelievable part, it was that someone fighting for their life against Bigfoots would write a diary so detailed, long, and with dialogue. Let alone that this diary would survive the war zone and winter depicted in the story. Actually really loved the speculation on Bigfoot behavior.
I definitely wouldn't classify this as horror and it didn't read scary to me in any way, but it was a good book! The mixed-media format (journal and interview mainly) wasn't really...necessary? I don't know that it was used well, this could have just been a straight novel so that was a bit disappointing but the overall story was interesting. It took a bit for the characters to grow on me since the novel really is more about them and the human relationships than the Sasquatch attack, but grow they did! I really was rooting for everyone to make it out (though it's clear from the very name 'Sasquatch Massacre' that they don't) and I really enjoyed Katie's character evolution.
Would I say this was the best book ever, a genre changer like World War Z was? No. Is it still an enjoyable read with interesting characters and an intriguing survival plot and setting? Definitely.

A review from a first time Max Brooks reader and as an audio only consumer of the book.
I wanted to be terrified by this book but just wasn’t. something about the train of thoughts style journal as the main source of the book made it increasingly hard to follow the plot. Add in the excerpts from other sources that to me via audio weren’t properly identified I was more confused than I was scared.
Yes the ending sequences left me on the slightest edge and the tiniest bit emotional but I think the impact could have been so much more had I been reeled in from the beginning and not left struggling to keep up through the first half.

Probably 2.5 really.
I wanted to like this after World War Z but the pacing was just off and the story was no where near as edge-of-your seat. It was almost too predictable over all.

I enjoyed reading this book so much. Then I just listened to the audio performance of the book and I loved it again. For me, that’s the right order: reading, then listening. Encountering this book right before the massive regional disaster that Hurricane Helene visited upon the southern Appalachia mountain has made me think hard about the likely regional disasters that can happen in the book’s settling (volcanos being only one of several options on the menu).
I think the Durant’s character progression could’ve been better supported, but that is my only quibble.
