Almost 40% through and nothing interesting was happening here. Yes there were references to this fictional character and that but not substantially amusing. I've read some reviews and the book is supposedly entertaining due to its use of "stream of consciousness" writing but I found that it was all dry, again, nothing interesting. It did not even build up enough intrigue for me to know what happens in the end. There are great books that you have to trudge through because it is building up on something wonderful but reading this felt like a waste of time.
I didn't like this book. I didn't want to continue reading it and only finished it so that I would be done with it and "released" to return it to the library. I didn't really care about the main characters. I found myself skipping large sections of the plot just to hurry along and be done with it.

I was so confused by this book. I'm not 100% sure what happened. There are references to Peter Pan and A Christmas Carol and also someone sleeping with their step-cousin and a ghost possession? Maybe?!
I kept thinking this book would just get a little bit better, it meanders quite a bit. I've always had difficulty engaging with a book told from the standpoint of an unsympathetic character. I did not hate this, just continued to read thinking, I know there's something interesting coming here...and eventually it did, but pretty much the down to the last 20% of the book. Luckily it was a fairly quick read, so I didn't feel too cheated. An interesting piece and premise, but not a compelling read.
What the fuck?
Very different then Wicked and his other books
I have a hard time understanding
1. What just happened and
2. Sure it mentions Christmas Carol but it's not a retelling???
Hello???

This book is soooo slllooooww. Around, I don't know, maybe page 25, a woman goes to visit her cousin. He knows she is coming, yet when she gets there, he isn't there. Instead, two guys are at his house doing some renovations, but they say they haven't seen him in a while either. And they haven't been able to get much work done because they keep hearing creepy noises. Then nothing new happens for about another 100 pages other than extremely bizarre dialogue and so many awkward book references that it felt like the author was screaming, "Look how well read I am!" After those 125 or so pages, the pace started to pick up and the ridiculous book references started to decrease. It felt like something was actually about to happen! But it was a false alarm. Nothing ended up happening for roughly another 150 pages. So basically, nothing happened until roughly 60 pages from the end. And even then, it was kind of anticlimactic and extremely poorly explained. Didn't like it, wouldn't recommend it, wouldn't reread it. I could barely even finish it, and I'm being pretty generous by giving it two stars.
Falls far short of the intrigue promised by the jacket description. It sounds so promising, then falls flat about 1/3 of the way in. I would only recommend this to die-hard MacGuire fans who feel the need to read every one of his novels. Otherwise, steer clear of this dud.
I absolutely love this author, but this book definitely missed the mark for me. It took several times to get past even the first chapter, and I have left the book finished but feeling exhausted and unsatisfied.
