Midnight in Death

J.D. Robb

3.96 AVERAGE

Good short one.

I'm not going to rate it because I didn't realize that it was a novella until the abrupt (to me) ending, but it feels unfair to penalize the book for my mistake. I liked it more than a lot of novellas, they just aren't my format.

A pretty quick in between the books novella. Granted it was supposed to be quick, but of course it left me wanting more! I loved the interaction between Eve & Roarke, as always. It was interesting since it was a killer Eve had already put away before and she knew who the killer was. Then she just had to find a way to stop him. Great little story.

Review as originally posted on The Book Addict's Guide: This was a super quick read since it's a novella in between the full books. It obviously left me wanting more because I can never have enough of this series!

It was a very interesting twist that this time Dallas and her team knew who the killer was, knew him personally having studied him to get him behind bars the first time around, and now they just need to find a way to catch him. Eve soon realizes it's not that easy, and Palmer starts picking off her friends and former allies one by one until he gets to her as the grand finale.

It surely was a thrilling little story! We jumped right into the action and clearly not having to figure out who the suspect was seemed to be a way to really cut down on time. Regardless of length, it was still very interesting to read and I always love learning more about the characters and observing more of their interactions. Anyone who hasn't read the series can still probably read this since they really try not to put too much back story in there (I'm guessing since some readers tend to skip these "in-betweeners").

If you wanted to read a quick Romantic Suspense/Mystery novella, I would recommend this book. You don’t have to read the earlier books to read it, but I always recommend reading in order. You’ll miss out on the character development that J.D. Robb does for each character in the series. She does a fantastic job in each of her books in the series with her characters and addicting storylines.

Overall, this novella received 4-stars and was a great short story for the In Death series.
adventurous challenging emotional tense fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

4.5 stars and rounding up to 5. I really enjoyed this shorter format. I still felt like we got a full story got to see all our favorite characters, just in a shorter package and I loved that. This series on audio is absolutely wonderful...I don't usually enjoy police/detective stories but this one just works for me and the narration of the audiobooks is a big part of why.

DID NOT FINISH: 41%

I don't think this is a good indicator of the whole in death series but this novella just isn't great.
The writing is stilted. The plot is uninteresting. The characters feel both flat and overexplained.
I could have finished it but I wanted a Christmas murder mystery and this book didn't seem interested in providing that.

Book Nerd Your Way 2021... Book #39

One case barely closed and on Christmas Day a body turns up. Eve discovers on of her violet criminals has escaped a place it should be impossible to escape from and she is on his list to die. Fighting the clock to the New Year to save herself and someone she really cares about makes this short story Tense but amazingly done.

Short and sweet. Plenty of detail. However, at this rate, no real cop could handle this level of pressure without cracking. Great in fiction though.

While impressed with Roberts' ability to condense an In Death book into about 90 pages, I can't help but be disappointed.

I've been reading a lot novellas and #.5 books in different series the past few days (in my rush to get as many books in before the new year) and I have discovered a new found love for them. These are books I typically skip in my rush to get on with the next book in the series, but they often provide a bit of insight into the characters in-between the books. Whether it's a silly scene between with MCs or a main focus on side character, they usually offer something a main series book doesn't; even if it's not as good.

This, however, was just a shortened version of a full length novel, which wasn't as good and didn't add anything to the series. She could have just expanded it and published it as a new book in the series. I'm not sure what Roberts' reason was for writing this - perhaps it was for a serial publication or just for fun, but I kept hoping it would be something else.

I would have liked an In Death .5/novella to be a frivolous scene between Roake an Eve around the Christmas tree, a murder/mystery with Peabody and McNab as the MCs, a prequel - Eve's first case, Roarke's childhood, etc, etc.

It was a good book for what it was, I'm just disappointed because I hoped for something that wasn't there. There's a lot of ways an author can utilize an in-between book or novella and this just wasn't what I wanted to read. It looks like there are a few more In Death novellas and I hope they will add a little more to what happens between books, but I have a feeling they wont.
