The concept is so simple, anyone can do it.

A good book to read for those new to the concept of mindfulness and curious about meditation techniques. Kabat-Zinn frequently refers to persuasive existing data on the success of mindfulness and often relies on analogies and examples to make abstract ideas more concrete. I would have liked to see at least one fact to correspond with each abstract concept, as this would have been more interesting to me, but the book is still worthwhile for those struggling with anxiety, depression, etc.

A small book but contains a lot to think about. Kabat-Zinn presents a mostly easy way to understand the basics of mindfulness. Some of the writing is confusing, but overall a nice introduction. This edition also offers a CD with some guided meditation exercises by Kabat-Zinn. I prefer the book 10% Happier by journalist Dan Harris, who offers a more approachable intro to mindfulness and meditation.

I'm hesitant to rate this book before I've taken time to actually practice what it teaches, but my initial reaction is that it's a good mix of theory and practice, with perhaps a bit more of each needed. I know this is a beginner's book, but it was pretty short and I feel like I needed a little more depth. Of course. That probably just means I need to read more books on mindfulness.

Without having read any other books on this topic, I would recommend this one to others.

I like Kabat-Zinn a lot, and appreciate how relatable he is in this book, never making it seem like meditation and mindfulness is easy or simple. He breaks down the principles behind mindfulness - all borrowed from Buddhism, of course, but at least he is honest about his sources - and takes you through some fairly straightforward meditations. I think this was especially effective as an audiobook because his voice is very calming. My only issue is that I think he's a bit too in love with his own voice, particularly during the meditations. Let there be quiet, Jon! Isn't part of all this learning to live with silence?

Halfway in and, while I know this book is about mindfulness, I couldn’t tell you what the author is trying to achieve here. The layout is confusing, thoughts disjointed. As a beginner I didn’t find this book helpful at all. Maybe I’ll try it again if I ever get further down the meditation road?
