A very interesting yet ideal format for such a heavy topic. Highly recommend for those who know little about this piece of American history

such an incredible, honest, & beautiful way to tell a hard story!
this graphic novel follows a young girl who is basically displaced in time (aka time travel) to the Japanese American internment camps, that her own grandmother and many others endured in WWII.

brutally honest but gentle, this captured the story so well and i cried and laughed and smiled and cried more.

makes me realize how little i knew about the Japanese American internment camps… but if this is how history was taught to me in school i woulda been a scholar!

I like the idea and intentions behind this story more than the actual story. I agree that the WWII Japanese camps are an under discussed topic, but the time travel element felt forced. I think maybe I'm just not sure who this GN is intended for - if it's kids then that makes more sense and I can see why the time travel frame was used. But if it's for teens/YA/Adults then I think the horror of the camps needn't have been watered down so. It's a good jumping off point on a path to reading more factual, in depth histories.

wow - this book is super powerful and eye-opening. a great way to learn about a part of history that often gets swept under the rug.

Lots of history that isn't taught in most schools, a very personal journey. Informative, though I feel George Takei's book They Called Us Enemy handled it better.

beautiful story about history, memory, and generational trauma. i wasn't taught about japanese-interment camps until my senior year of high school; the only reason i knew of their existence was because of family stories about jewish relatives who had just fled nazi germany and settled on the west coast, who were horrified by seeing the camps. telling stories within your family and communicating your history to each other is sometimes the only way we can learn the truth of the world.

i learned so much from this book!
