Why did I sleep on this book for so long?!

“But the will of the damned is stronger.”

This is a fantastic fantasy novel, that has everything! You all know I love a book with unique magic and this one delivered. The political intrigue was killing me! I could feel the walls around our FMC Sylvia. The characters all had great depth, and there were elements in all of them that I could relate to. The world building definitely took some time in the beginning of the novel but was in depth, and added to naturally throughout. I feel well prepared for whatever comes next in the world. The twists had me clutching my pearls, and I couldn’t stop reading until I finished. I may have neglected some things while reading this because I was so invested.

This book was high stakes, true enemies to maybe lovers, hidden magic, hidden heir, political intrigue… I’m probably forgetting a thousand things but seriously, go read this one. If you’ve been considering, get to it!

I have to preface this book with saying that I'm not a huge fan of fantasy novels, but I do enjoy reading them in bed to help me fall asleep. That said, the story of The Jasad Heir is actually quite good and engaging. I'll likely buy the second one when it comes out.

This book was a really slow start for me. There is SO MUCH world building and information dumping that happens in the beginning of the book that it got a little confusing. Then, the plot started picking up around 20%, and then we burst into hundreds of pages of more info-dumping and preparing for these trials. The trials were such a small portion of the book but approximately half the book was spent just prepping for them, and we really don't get to see much of them when they are going on. They are super quick and fast, and then we get more info-dumping after each trial!

I am fine with the relationship between Essiya and Arin but it's not really drawing much interest for me. It is (marketed as) slow burn-ish but Essiya saying she loves him?? Come on, girl!! Straight up insta-love right there, they barely know each other. However, I LOVED the end. I loved that dramatic reveal in the last chapter of Essiya revealing who she is in a huge ballroom and then having an insane display of magic - we love that! I was also rooting for her to team up with the Urabi the whole time, I knew she was going to do it so I am very happy about that! I think Sefa and Marek were just...disappeared?? We hear nothing else other than Essiya literally snapping her fingers and evaporating them so hopefully she took them with her! I also loved the epilogue that was in Arin's POV! I think the other two Arin POV interludes we had really didn't do much for the story, but the epilogue was great and I really enjoyed seeing his anger. Maybe next book will be split POV? I am interested to see more of Arin's perspective/worldview.

I think this book set up a really interesting sequel, so I am excited to read it! The one thing I want the most for the sequel is for Essiya and Arin to have a huge battle (for the drama, of course).

As much as I wanted to support this, too convoluted for me and I couldn't keep up either via the audio or the e-book. Maybe I need to physically read this and take my time but for now - will get back to this later.

Why is book two not out yet?
What a beautiful story and world. I can’t wait to see how it ends. The characters really worm their way into your heart. And the mystery of the story really makes you want to binge read the whole book.
