While the start was a bit slow (I do get that it's called 'Star Wars' for a reason, but there were too many words spent explaining the surroundings in the beginning, which could've been used somewhere else) and took quite some time to pick up the pace, it was still worth it. The scenes that weren't used in the movie just make this story click together.
It was a pleasure to look forward to Rey and Ben's chapters, and even the other settings (such as Canto-Bight which is a dread to watch, but the flow is much better here) are a bit weaker, they still manage to make you care for the characters.
I'm sorry, but I still can't see the romance between Rose and Finn (yes, there are hints, but in my opinion it's more of a friendship)
Overall, I liked it!

I always miss this universe (or galaxy if you prefer) as soon as I've left it and this time was no exception. I finished the final page, closed the book and immediately wished I was back.
If you expect this novelisations to expand on what is shown in the movie, this novel completely fails to do that. Still, it bridged the gap between watching the movie in the cinema and getting to watch it at home on Netflix.
It also allows you to highlight phrases and take screen captures of them to fight with other fans on the internet about the viability of your crack pairing, and really, what else are novelisations for?
Also, it is MUCH less hilarious than the TFA novelisation, which makes me think that this is secretly written from the point of view of a saner character than Kylo Ren, but so far, I've been at a loss as to whom.

I read a *lot* of Star Wars in the 1990's to the first years of this century. At one point, I was up-to-date with all of the Expanded Universe. It has been almost 20 years since my last Star Wars novel (novelisation of Revenge of the Sith), however. I picked this one up, because the novelisations of the prequels were so much better than the movies. Since I didn't love The Last Jedi movie, I assumed that the book would fix the story and make it all make sense.
Alas, I was incorrect. The book is almost a scene-by-scene regurgitation of the film itself, with nothing fleshed out. In fact, there are some bits missing - the lightsaber duel between Luke and Ben was far more exciting in the film than it was in the novel. It essentially didn't happen in the book.
I honestly wanted to love this. So, my disappointment may be making me be more harsh on this novel than is fair. But in truth, this may be one of those rare cases where the movie is actually better than the book. Which is a real pity, because as mentioned, I didn't love the film, either. Both were ok.

I loved the movie, but this book left much to be desired. I'm mainly glad that certain things were cut out of the movie, such as Rose's insufferable jealousy. The audiobook performance is superb, though!
Much like the other novelizations of the Star Wars films (excluding Revenge of the Sith), it doesn’t add too much new to the story and often regurgitates the script. Some things are better explained, but overall the film conveys the emotions and dialogue better. It’s a quick read and it got me hyped to watch the movie again, so I guess it did its job.
A beautiful retelling of a beautiful film.
While I usually find movie novelizations redundant, this one really amplifies the experience. The writing is simple but captivating: it's very hard to put the book down. Storywise, the most welcome addition is the insight into the characters' minds - a priviledge of literature over cinema.
All in all, great stuff.

The problem with the novelizations of the new movies is that they don’t add much in the way of characterization all in the name of not wanting to reveal too much of what’s coming ahead. Just ok, even with the expanded material.
The relationship build up between Kylo and Rey is very well done.
