I won a copy of this book from goodreads First Reads. I read quite a bit of historical fiction but admittedly not much of American history. So this book had a lot of history, events and people that I knew very little about. It was really enjoyable, though I'm not sure how realistic Kate and her relationships were. I believe this is the author's first book, and she plans to make it a trilogy. I would definitely read the next book if so.

Don't let the beautiful and tame cover fool you, but this would equal at least three flames on the spice scale (leaning towards four). I really enjoyed Tremayne and Kate's romance; they're on the same epic scale as Jamie and Claire!
adventurous dark emotional medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I know I’ve read too much enemies-to-lovers when I was routing for Caide at some points as he seemed to have more complexity than the love interest.
While so many historical tidbits were so fun for me as a Revolutionary history fan, I did have a problem with the decision to make the Lorings’ rebel sympathizers without much evidence while her husbands actions hurt so many prisoners of war.
But overall, it was an enthralling story with enough romance and historical accuracy to keep me reading.

Thorland doesn't pull punches with this book. It IS a romance, but it has a lot more historical merit than most books in the genre. There is a heavy amount of political intrigue and strategizing around the American Revolutionary war and there are some big players involved in the central action. There is also quite a bit of violence that isn't romanticized in any way-- particularly the violence towards women. Kate gets some VERY harsh treatment, so if you aren't able to stomach that sort of thing don't read the book.

On the other hand it is a really compelling story and Kate is more much than a pretty face. She is full-on lady spy for much of the book and watching her intrigue her way around the British army is pretty fun.

The romance is a bit funny because it almost feels like a love triangle even though as it is going on you sort of know that Kate isn't going to choose Bay (because he's a bad guy.) Though bizarrely I sort of liked him. He was a little bit of an anti-hero with the heroine, even though the author clearly was just trying to write a nuanced villian. I was sort of taken with him. Don't get me wrong, I was happy that Kate ended up with Peter, I could just see the attraction to Bayard.

Overall this book was an enjoyable read because it was a bit outside the traditional tropes of the genre and had a pretty meaty historical plot.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I'm keen to read a lot more books, both fiction and nonfiction, set during this time period now.

I found this a very good historical romance. Spies in the American Revolution what's not to like! I will say the story held me till the end, where I felt it began to unravel a little. I didn't like where things went with Bay and by that point in the story I felt there was too much going on. Overall, however, I thought it was a pretty good book that kept me interested and I'd recommend it to any fan of the genre.

I am such a sucker for historical fiction books, mainly Colonial times and the Civil War. This book was very well written about staying patriotic, yet chasing love and losing it as well. Kate was just a badass from the beginning, questioning everything and standing up for her family. She was an awesome spy and that would be why Tremayne can't get off of her. Loved the sexual tension and the action of the story. One of my favorites.

Wow. A great historical novel. Enough details to make me feel I was getting a history lesson, but not so much I was bored. Great characters. Real danger, real struggles, lots of spy drama, but it wasn't over the top. Author knows how to create strong characters.

Oh god. I tried. I really did but . . . Just no. It couldn't be done. That's a romance? And suspense? And actions? I don't think so.
