This author has become a must read for me, she has a way of creating characters that stay with you, I find myself recommending her books all the time!
The story begins with us being introduced to Nova Doubeck who is a single woman, she is hard working and just trying to make ends meet. When Imani who is Nova’s best friend and asks for a favor Nova has no idea her life is about to change. The favor is a big one fostering two young children a brother and sister Bella 7 and Henry 9. Nova doesn’t usually foster younger children, she only ever fostered teenagers. Nova is familiar with the foster system but she was lucky to be adopted at the age of six. She still
suffers from nightmares of the time she was in the system.
The brother and sisters life hasn’t been very easy their mother has passed away and their father leaves them on the weekends and just disappears. Bella is shy and a bit timid and Henry can be aggressive. Nova can see that their life so far has taken a toll on them. We see that Nova has become attached to the children. The only issue is the father’s custodial hearing is fast approaching. Nova has hopes that she will be able to adopt the children. Unfortunately the father is an extremely dangerous man, and Nora has no clue that it’s actually someone she may know! Wow I loved this book and I couldn’t put it down and I highly recommend it!

I hated to put this one down! The heartwrenching story of two children, put into foster care to get them away from neglect and abuse. Scared. Secrets unfold, love blooms, and a protectiveness worth fighting for. My heart broke, my heart sang... i felt all the emotions. This was a story I'm not used to reading much of, and I'm so glad I was able to. I highly recommend this journey.

If you haven’t read one of Christine Nolfi’s books, they are always full of heart, and I love how they are evolving over time. A Heart Like Home is her newest, and it addresses foster care.

About the book: “Finding family is a journey of love, risk, secrets, and healing in a powerful novel by the bestselling author of A Brighter Flame, The Passing Storm, and The Road She Left Behind.”

Nova was adopted as a child, and as an adult, she’s asked to foster two children. Nova has a lot of love to give because of her past experience and how healing her adoptive parents had been for her. She fosters nine-year-old Henry, and his seven-year-old sister, Bella.

The children have been living in an abusive household when they come to Nova. Henry is acting out, while Bella is more timid and fearful. It takes time for Nova to connect with the children, but with care and persistence, it happens. She also becomes their best advocate, fiercely so.

Christine Nolfi handles the topics of foster care and adoption with care. A Heart Like Home is a truly heartwarming and poignant story and one that will stay with me a long time. My mom is reading it now and can hardly put it down.

I received a gifted copy of the book.

Christine Nolfi wrote a beautiful book. Nova’s story is not easy but it is real and true. Her history tells her to be careful and her heart tells her to help the children that need her the most, I was taken straight into Nova, Henry, and Bella’s world.

Nova is phenomenal. The strength she has while building her life is amazing. She works hard, she makes something of herself, and opens her house to children who need a safe space to stay. I love how hard Nova worked to build her business, she was self-made and deserved the recognition she was working towards. She tries hard not to open her heart to her foster children but they quickly work their way right into her world and heart. She knows that she will do anything to keep them safe.

The twist of this story was something I almost saw coming. When it happen I had that aha moment that put it all together and made Nova’s world complete. I love that aha moment, it is perfect.

Nova, a single gal who works in landscape construction, is also a foster mom.  She usually takes in teens but was asked to take in a 9 and 7 year old sibling duo. The drama that comes with these two kids, supervised visits with their dad and obvious signs of abuse is captivating. You watch Nova fall in love with these kids and understands what her adoptive parents went through when she was adjusting.  These kids crack Nova wide open and Nova cracks the little boy as well. There is a little “oh shit” moment in the last 20% of the book.  While this won’t win any awards, it was an enjoyable read with a lot of character development for all characters involved!

Touching

This was an emotional story with some surprising family secrets. Nova was a very likable lead character. Her desire to help at-risk youth was very sweet. I loved her determination to protect Henry and Bella. Their father was such a monster. He created so much angst everywhere that he went. The story became more interesting when Nova’s connection to the kids was revealed. I loved the suspense that was built up when Bella was taken away. This is the type of book that would translate so well to a movie screen. I really enjoyed this book.
