I love the setting of a quiet Amish town for this series, but this is book 9 and Kate is still getting caught off guard and disarmed and fighting for her life (twice!) I don’t know why anyone would say this is the best in the series so far. Her boyfriend/lover should leave her for all the gray hairs she's caused him. At least the first time she gets disarmed in this book she's ashamed and admits she screwed up. However, her mistake is not enough to keep it from happening later. It's not good writing when the main character of a series repeatedly falls for traps and runs straight into danger without backup or nobody knowing where she is all the time. Kate’s recklessness and penchant for trouble are the main themes throughout the series and are way too formulaic for me to give this book more than 3 stars.

Once again Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is involved in solving a crime that involves the Amish and hits close to home. Is her adolescent puppy love Joseph King really the hard core murderer he has been sent to prison for or was he railroaded, in part because he was his own worst enemy? When he escapes from prison can Kate prove he is innocent or is her judgement clouded by memories of the young Joseph King?

The newest book in the series and it was a good one. Kate is back as the Chief. She receives word that a childhood friend who was sent to prison for killing his wife, has escaped. She goes to the house where his kids are living now, just in case, and is ambushed by Joseph. She's taken hostage in the house. But it's not your typical hostage situation. He claims he didn't kill his wife and was framed. Sure, typical of prisoners--but Kate is let go and has a nagging feeling that things don't add up.

So the book is about Kate re-opening the investigation and finding things that aren't quite right about the investigation. The book is about friendship, corrupt cops and Kate doing her due diligence. It was a fast read!

I found Kate to be particularly grating in this novel. I just couldn't push past her making yet another ridiculous error in judgement. I am a completionist so I'll likely try again.

Of course I said this before but this book has been the best one in the series. They just keep getting better and better. An Amish friend, from when Kate was a young girl, has been sentenced for killing his wife. He breaks out of prison and ambushes Kate, tells her that he did not kill his wife. And a shit storm happens from there. A very edge-of-your-seat adventure.

I wrote down the usual notes for this book that I do with this series. Lots of police jargon and Pennsylvania Dutch words and phrases. So I will only write down the few that aren't that.

page 275 - title alert! "....had gone down a dark road". (No spoilers)

page 325 - a reloader - someone who will reload their own shells for a gun instead of buying new ones from the store. I knew people did that but I didn't know there was a name for it.

page 350 - Fatal Attraction meets Amish Mafia. I think I laughed a little too hard at that.

I guessed early on who the killer was but it didn't take away from the story. I could have been wrong. I also had theories of others who could have been the killer. It could have gone in any direction.

I absolutely love this series and am now reading the short story that was written to go after this book. It also makes me happy that the author is continuing this series. I am a happy reader right now!
