I mostly read this because of Erin and I going to Copenhagen and it seemed like an easy read. I didn’t think much of it for most of the book, mostly because it really did not need to be a full length book. Probably could have summed it up in a short essay. But the ending surprisingly moved me. I like the bit about hygge being cultivating happiness in the everyday and I think, even though it was kind of trite, the part about practicing gratitude is something that would be worthwhile to try.

Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute, has finally written a book on the concept of hygge (pronounced hoo-ga).  It's a Danish concept, with roots sprawled out across Europe, focusing on the warmth and comfort within the feeling of safety and happiness.  But how can we accomplish this feeling of hygge?  Wiking analyzes responses from hygge-loving Danes, offering a couple of ideas on how to feel hygge: candles, friends and family, safety, being indoors, books, lamps, lighting, card games--the list goes on.

With lovely illustrations and graphics, this book exudes hygge itself, making it absolutely perfect for these coming wintry months.  I can't wait to fully enact this hygge advice in my current room, and hopefully later once I have my own apartment.  Just you all wait--I'm going to have so many candles, blankets, space heaters, curtains, lamps, and more, all thanks to Wiking here!

Always really interesting to look at mindfulness from other cultures

Ég datt aðallega inn í þessa út af skemmtilegum Danglish hreimi hjá manninum sem las inn a á hljóðbókina.

So, ok. I enjoyed the book, I appreciated the many examples, and I liked the fact that there's hard data quoted in it. That being said, the structure of the book was not hyggeligt (did I get that one right?)... it repeats itself a bit too much for my taste. And I didn't get the Nazi reference... why not say gold? Is there an extra meaning? Reading that word felt out of context and upsetting.

Definitely repetitive and somewhat materialistic - but hygge is something I aspire to be, very much enjoyed this audiobook!
