THIS BOOK IS MORE THAN A COOKBOOK!!!!! Food is culture and food is community. It has never been more clear than how it has been shown in this book. The essays between talking about the intersections within the black community and how it is showcased through individual cooks or cultural staples are beautiful and thought provoking. Plus the cookout staples??? Get the fuck out of here. So delicious.

I picked this up expecting a cookbook with some stories but not expect the breadth of this book. More than just a cook book - although they had a great range of recipes and cooking styles and amazing pictures, but the essays on food and culture and the art and the look at the bigger influences on food. Loved that there was a queer section and even that there were some non food recipes.

Excited to try the recipes, and I enjoyed the essays even if I found some of them repetitive, either within the singular piece or within the themed areas.

Pairs well with Natalie Baszile's "We are Each Other's Harvest."
