Brings up some pretty good questions/thoughts regarding the obsession around true crime and it’s gendered aspects

I actually really enjoyed this. I thought the concept of breaking down true crime consumers into different archetypes was very smart, and helped open my mind up to a fandom/ subculture/ media base that I've never really understood or found interest in.
I didn't need it to be much more than that, honestly, and I felt the interpersonal narrative scattered throughout helped me see it as a more personal story of discovery and curiosity.
Overall, I liked it a lot. The audiobook was very well done and I do recommend it to most anyone!

Covers the women’s collective interest in true crime from four different vantage points, both broadly and in depth looks at four women who represent each define category. The author also reflects on her own relationship with an interest in true crime. Well told and interesting. A lot of thoughtful investigative work went into the book so as to not leave gaps for the reader. You get all the info to make your own judgements and draw conclusions about yourself. I’d heard of all the women who were looked into, but learned new things about each. While the goal was definitely to make the reader reflect on their consumption of crime as entertainment, it didn’t feel preachy or holier-than-tho.
Graphic: Mass/school shootings
Moderate: Racism, Murder
The whole book is amazing, but the last chapter is epic. Probably one of the best pieces of investigative journalism I've ever read.

This is a very messy book, but still worth the read for any true crime fan. More of a meta-true crime book, but still satisfactory.
I think Monroe missed the mark on any cohesive theme she may have been going for. Thematically the four vignettes stand on their own and are only loosely related. Too often the narrative thread winding through each vignette gets lost in the weeds, but the narrative and meta-narrative are still worthy journalistic endeavors, flawed as they may be.
3.5 stars as a standard non-fiction sociology book
4.5 stars as a true crime work and analysis
