I found this book because I have a deep love for all things epistolary. This elaborate correspondence, covering everything from Scooby Doo to Tibetan Buddhism, to "love" and what lies after death, is pretty great. I'm so glad that they turned it into a book.

Very few books make me cry, but this truly touched my soul during a very unusual (and painful) time in my life. No words could describe the illimitable love I have for Max’s and Sarah’s words, their love, and friendship.

Thoughtful, touching guide to living.
An advocacy for poetry-infused life.

I cannot think of any other reading experience I've had that parallels this one. It was an honor to see the exchange between these two minds, and to experience the value and inspiration of poetry behind the scenes.

A devastating relationship between two poets who knew each other better than many of us know ourselves. I first read Sarah in college where her plays speak to dreamers, dissatisfied with the stuffy material so often pushed on an education in theatre. It's no wonder that Max and his poems were drawn to her tutelage, and later friendship. I learned about this book reading Between Two Kingdoms and I'm so glad I followed the instinct to read more about Max. He leaps off the page as someone you wish you could know better, a wish that only grows stronger as you read their final correspondence.

I tried reading this book per recommendation of my partner, and enjoyed the first half of the book. Emails from Max to his teacher Sarah were entertaining, heartwarming and funny and times. Unfortunately, this was terribly difficult for me to get through after the letters turn from emails to extended letters. I wish it had been edited down to 200-250 pages, and focused more on max’s writings than Sarah’s.
